Front Wheel Bearing

Front Wheel Bearing
Well, I knew it was going to happen. Just didn't think it would happen so soon... When I did the timing system, I had the jag on stands and noticed there was a little play on the RH front wheel. It wasn't making noise, or causing drive-ability problems, so I didn't replace it. Well, now its making crackly noises when turning. Its my understanding that the job is not too difficult, so I will attempt it myself. Anything special I need to do? Thanks all for your help!

I am running Centric (normal run of the mill) brake pads all around, stock rotors that have been turned and Timken bearings. You can buy the bearings at any parts store since I think they are the same ones that fit a ford Probe, lol. You will need that silly ABS toner ring removal socket to get the job done, and it is still tough to get the ring off, even then.

Lucky you I had a nightmare of a time trying to do it without the socket. I finally ordered the socket and got it done. I tried giant channel locks (like 2.5' long ones, hammer and chisel, I didnt try the 4 prong axle socket since I destroyed mine removing a locking ring from a Kia Sorento and I still havent replaced it. I wish I could have tried that!

I will use this thread because there is no need of a new one since the topic of my question is very similar.
5 days ago I started to hear strange noise coming from the front wheels when moving. First I suspected the tires, but today I picked up the car in my garage and when I turned the right front wheel it doing "who who who" - no I'm sure that this is bearing
Here is the place for my question. I checked the EPC and found out that there is difference between the bearings for XJ8 after a certain VIN (853935). So as my VIN is: SAJJJALG3CR 836740 the right one for my car should be MJA1830AD (instead of MNC1830AA which is for the newer models). Is that right? And if yes, please confirm - is this the size of my bearing: 42.0 х 76.0 х 39.0 mm. (the other option for bearing should be with sizes: 42.0 х 80.0 х 45.0). I'm asking about the size because I intend to buy the bearing directly from SKF (because of the high quality and good prices), but they don't have software with part number cross-reference. That's why I need to provide the exact size!

Bob,
I think you may be right. At any rate, to help out other members, the SKF number is BAH0028AA. Also the shop had a heck of a time pressing it out, so if you're thinking of pressing it out yourself, think twice if it involves buying a press.
For me a 12 point 2 inch socket worked great on the nut. I placed the wheel face down on the floor, and pressed down hard while using my impact gun. Came off nicely.
I'm doing a full brake job while I'm at it, and really looking forward to driving a car that doesn't howl from the front end and shudder under braking.

Turned out to be a bit of a nightmare. After driving around the block, the bearing failed, tons of free play. The shop that did it was closed so I went to a machine shop with a new bearing. They suspect it wasn't pressed in properly, but we'll never know.
Anyway, this shop buggered up the bearing presing it in, so a week later after a busines trip I got it back after having the shop torque the nut to 300 nm.
It's all good now, but Lordy what a pain.

Excellent tip. I tried many things, but had no luck so I broke down and spent $130 or so on the socket from british parts. I did not try my 3/4 drive 2" 12 pt socket though. I wish I would have thought to use it!
