Default Tune Up inquiry :

2001 XJ8L
Fuel filter : Now I'm reading it's simple then I'm seeing where some had to remove their fuel tank to do it. I was looking to get the plugs,fuel & air filters done by my mechanic, thing is he's not familiar with Jaguars. He's been great with Japanese & American cars.

Don't want to give him a seemingly simple task that will have the car bogged down all weekend as that's when I drive it the most.

Also how daunting of a task is it to remove the valve covers to inspect the tensioners.

Edit : Going to get the rear differential oil changed as well any recommendations on brand/grade @ 126K mileage.

You must be confusing the fuel pump inlet screen with the fuel filter. The fuel pump screen would require a fuel tank removal unless you are a contortionist and don't mind risking crushing the fuel line. Removing the tank would give little benefit to changing the fuel filter, which is in the left rear inner wheel well.

Likely, as it was a late night when I researched it lol. What about the valve covers ?

Valve Covers (or Cam Covers) are on the top of the cylinder heads . They keep oil in and debris out.

I know what they are, I was asking how difficult of a task is it to remove them & check the tensioners, Thanks.

Valve covers are easy to remove left bank jou undo 6 bolt of the coil covers the one with jaguar on it then you disconnect the coils and 2 bolts per coil. And pull them out now its just loosen all the bolt that hold the cover in place dont pull them out just loosen couse these are hold in place by the gasket on the inside. And then pull the cover off carefully. When refitting clean surfaces and inspect for damaged gasket en dont overtighten the bolts should be around 10 nm what i know off right side undo first the intake 1 bolt on the throttle body and and a clamp at the maf sensor side and disconnect breather hose and also clean it allways a good thing to do that! Disconnect the mafsensor connector and 1 nut on the air box then pull it out held in rubber on the underside. Then proceerd with the valve cover. If you do this i would look in the throttle body at the butterfly valve see if its clean (no oil black muck) if its not clean it with a cloth an carb cleaner and when youre doing this you can change the plugs yourself before you put the coils back in
