Fuel Gauge Problem

Fuel Gauge Problem
Hello All!
I'm starting to get to the end of my transmission problems, now I need to get on with some electrical gremlins.
My fuel gauge acts very erratic. It was not functioning when I purchase the vehicle. I thought I repaired it by repairing the wires that were cut and held together with wire nuts. (This car has seen a rough life) But alas, it has gone sideways. It has been hovering around 3/4 tank, so to test if it was working properly, I put approx. 3 gallons worth of gas in the tank. After getting back in the car, the gauge was indicating empty and 0 miles range. It started to rise after 10 miles of driving. I have a 2003 XJ8 X308.
One other point of contention, all the parts catalogs and repair information I'm reviewing indicate the sender is supposed to be on the side of the tank. It seems to me that it is incorporated all at the top of the tank. There is an indentation on the side of my tank but no fuel sender. I'm going to attempt to test the cluster when I can, but when I purchased it, it did have a faulty for a fuel sender circuit fault, at that time, the sender was unhooked.

The 2001> X308 has a different fuel tank and sender setup. The sending unit is accessed through the top EVAP flange (as is/are the pump(s)).
You probably have a faulty sending unit but you should diagnose before removing the tank.
You can unplug the connector at the EVAP flange and use a variable resistor to simulate the sender. That way you can determine if the gauge is operating normally.
