fuel pump?

fuel pump?
i recently bought a 99 xj8. it appears to be a california car, but its been in florida for the last 6 years. it has multible issues, but the one that seems most pressing is the smell of gas in the cabin. ive traced it to the trunk, removed a panel that was covering the gas tank, and was a little surprised to see what i believe to be the fuel pump on the top of the tank, with no way to get it off except removing the tank. i dont see raw liquid gas. the hoses are secure. and other than a jumper wire?? spliced into a white connection that is on the right side of a light blue fuel pump??, every thing looks ok. but i think the the smell is coming from this area. is this a expected problem with this car? after the panel was removed the smell of gas was not as noticable in the cabin. if you roll down a window it seems to draw it in. if you pressurize the cabin by turning on the air, rolling up the widows, and turn the a/c recycle off so it draws in air from outside, you cant smell it at all. but driving what to me seems to be a car bomb, with gas fumes in a closed compartment with a 12v battery next to it, is not my idea of a nice ride. any thoughts, info, or redirection to a thread would be most appreciated. oh.. im new to the forum too

photo
not that it might matter, but this s a photo of the offending object and the jumper wire spliced into it. on side is grounded and the other is unhooked and taped up, and is long enough to reach the battery??? something else that i noticed, jaguar put a hole (for a speaker?) just to the left of the pump(?) but didnt put a hole over the pump so you could get access?

. . . well, welcome to the forum!
The device you are describing is the Evaporative Flange Assembly and is a good candidate for introducing gas fumes into the car.
Here is a snap shot from JTIS describing the device with the ill fated note that the tank must be removed.
You can down load a free copy of JTIS from this link compliments of Jim Lombardi: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...s-43702/page3/

ok, the tank has to come out. i can see how most of the hoses and pipes come undone. not sure about how the filler tube comes out without damage. i found a carriage bolt on one of the straps (see pic) that doesn't look like it came factory installed, so im guessing this tanks been out before. question: is the tank usually just strapped in or is it bonded on with some kind of double backed tape or adhesive? what is usually leaking the fumes, a seal or gasket? or a component mounted to it? guesses on why they had it out before? and if i was to take it to a shop, how many hours of labor am i looking at to remove and replace the tank?

lot of good info in the link below, youtube also has a 'how to' remove the tank video.
