Fuel Pump, cost reasonable?

Fuel Pump, cost reasonable?
My local mechanic told me that my 2003 VPD won't start because of either a bad fuel pump or bad wiring harness. Since they have to take out the fuel tank, they recommend replacing both fuel pump and the wiring harness. Cost about $470 plus 5-6 hours of labor. Does this sound reasonable to everyone? The mechanic has repaired my wife's cars for years and does a good job at a fair price. He repairs all cars and not a Jag specialist, but using original Jag parts and has some experience with Jags.
So besides the cost, I am reading in the forum that there are two fuel pumps??? There is no error code whatsoever on the screen. I first suspected that the engine was flooded (cylinider wash problem), but the mechanic got it started by putting some gas in the cylinders (?) so according to the mechanic it is the fuel pump. I guess my question is that's the case, how come there is no error code? Fuses were apparently checked. My concern is that they are going to do all this and the problem is something else.
Thanks,

Your car will only have 2 fuel pumps if it is supercharged. There will also be an extra link harness that you would probably want to change.
$475.40 is MSRP for a single pump, strainer, gasket, and sender w/harness.
So, as long as you can confirm that he is using new genuine parts, I would say that he is giving you a decent price.
If for whatever reason you choose to do the job yourself, or go somewhere else I have everything here for $356.55
Thanks

Thanks for all your replies. I don't have a supercharged car, so I guess that means one fuel pump. I don't know if a fuel pressure test was conducted.
I will check out your website for Jag parts. There is always something might need.
What can I do to avoid problems in the future the fuel pump? My father in law told me I should never have the tank on low, which it was (the light was on), as the fuel pump has to work harder. Is that the truth or just bogus?
Thanks, Chris

Christer, since the fuel pump is inside the tank, it is cooled by the fuel surrounding it. It receives less cooling if the tank is near empty - so, especially if it is nearing the end of its life span already - vis-a-vis bearings, etc., lack of sufficient cooling can push it over the edge.
For this, and other reasons, it is good practice to keep your tank filled, when possible, and not wait till the warning light comes on to find a station. This is the case for just about all modern, fuel injected vehicles - most have pumps internal to the tank.

Fuel Pump
While it isn't good to run the fuel level down to fumes, a 2003 needing a new fuel pump is a little unusual. I would definitely do a fuel pressure test or have the/a mechanic do one before shelling out the money to remove the tank and all that. If he did a fuel pressure test and it showed conclusively, then you'll have to bite the bullet one way or another. The most posts I've seen for fuel pump problems were with the secondary fuel pump on the XJRs, which you do not have, or if the car has been sitting a while and picks up some crap from the bottom of the tank.
