Default fuel pump R&R '98 xj

Diagnosing an intermittant no start/no fuel pressure led me to an apparent intermittant fuel pump.
A note for those facing similar issues; be advised that the inertia sensor plays a role and it isn't shown on the engine management wiring diagram so is easily overlooked. I thought this was my problem briefly only to discover jumping it to get the fuel pump to operate was only coincedental. Even with power applied the pump was finally caught sleeping.
Removing the tank is tedious as access to the fuel lines underneath is very tight. I removed the e-brake cable yoke and the driveshaft flex disc which made it tolerable and didn't require any special tools.
Once the pump was removed it was clear my troubles were from burned connections at the pump, inside the fuel tank. I know this is supposed to be an airless environment as the fuel vapors displace any atmosphere admitted but seeing this is none the less disturbing.
Can anyone tell me what the square inline device is between the FP and the connector? If is some sort of protection device it doesn't seem effective.
Good news is the fuel pump was dirt cheap at $45 for new Denso.

The cause of the discolouration is high temperatures and is not dependent on air. Air is only required for ignition. The connectors and wiring may be undersized for the current draw. Tuners routinely run 12AWG on fuel pump circuits because of the current draw.

Look for my earlier post about the inline module. Walbro holds a patent on a noise suppression module. Denso builds the noise cancellation into the pump itself. Noise suppression modules can also be inline outside of the tank. So ... overly complex and bad design.

Where did you get a Denso for $45? They usually run $80+.

And about the flexible Jurid coupling on the driveshaft ... Jaguar says never separate it ... separate the driveshaft at the flange interface.

Fuel pump from here; FUEL PUMP MODULE ASSEMBLY REPAIR KIT, OXYGEN SENSOR items in GLOBAL-AUTOMOTIVE store on eBay!
den1300 is their PN, $44.95 shipped, had it in a few days.
I seperated the joint at the diff flange, can't see what harm it could do and have done this to countless other cars with no ill effects.
The harness supplied with the repl. pump has even smaller gauge wire than the original, I hpoe this doesn't become an issue. The actual connections of the original were the point of resistance, they new one has a larger connector.
I suspected a noise supressor of sorts but it ohmed essentially zero on each lead and open between them from either side. I trusted Jag's engineers and left it in place.
