Default Fuel sender location?

I think I've got a bum fuel sender. Gauge is stuck at ~1/8 tank.

Lot's of threads/photos regarding replacing the fuel sender. It is supposed to be - I think - on the back of the tank. You can see it clearly here (part #8):

My car, a 2001 XJ8 L, manufactured 12/00, does not have a fuel sender there. I have a flat surface there - looks like you "could" cut it, and mount a fuel sender if you were so inclined... but it is solid metal right now.

I assume my sender is part of the fuel pump carrier? I've got to slide the tank out to access it through the fuel pump hole? My biggest question is: what part am I likely to need?

I think this is the part that would go on the back of the tank; the part I don't have/need:
FUEL TANK PETROL LEVEL SENDER / SENSOR UNIT Jaguar XJ8 XJR 1997-2002 (X308)

Maybe this is what I'll need?

Thanks-
Ryan.

Sorry if it is bad form to answer my own question...

According to the Welch Jaguar web site, part #LNG2001AB, is the correct sender for X308's from VIN# F20645 through 2003. Mine car is VIN #F31423, so I guess that is the right one ;-)

Okay, in your case, your fuel sender is accessed from the top of the gas tank. It is a pain in the rear to get the fuel sender out. You have to empty the tank of gas, remove the fuel lines from under the car and remove the fuel tank out from the trunk first. Then you can access thru the hatch on top of the gas tank. You will have access to the two fuel pumps (on XJR) and fuel sender. Since you have the tank open, you might as well replace the fuel pump(s) and filter(s) along with the sender. Be sure you get a replacement rubber access hole gasket before you put everything back together again. Look at Amazon.com for parts. I got my parts from Advanced Auto Parts at:

Sorry to hijack this thread but perhaps those of you looking at the fuel tank can help. I have a leak in the female part of the quick disconnect unions. Obviously, i'll have to remove the tank to get at the area. Here are my questions...are the unions repairable? Are those lines external to the tank? I haven't seen a clear enough picture to help me figure out what is possible...

Thanks, in advance, for any help...

Please look at the photos in my above post. You can clearly see both the male and female connection to the fuel tank. I would assume there is an o-ring in the female part that might be replaceable. If not try teflon tape around the male end. I did not have leaks in my situation. The toughest part of this job is disconnecting the union. It is tough to get your hand up in there. You will need a fuel line quick disconnect tool. If you get the tool in right, it will unhook immediately. If you don't, you could be fighting it for the next hour.

Thanks, I did look at the photos. Another question I have regards those fuel lines, with the female quick disconnects, that appear to run inside the tank...do they? I guess I'm expecting the worst and assuming the unions can't be repaired and wondered if those lines can be removed to be replaced...

Hmm... not sure. I did not look at the connection very closely because I did not have a leak from there at the time. I also wished I took a photo inside the tank. You are just going to have to pull out your tank to find out....

Where in the tank is the sender located?
i’m going to be replacing mine soon.
but even with those pictures that are posted on there I can’t get a direct answer, of where it actually is in the tank.

From VIN 812317 to VIN F20644 the fuel level sending unit is accessed from the rear of the tank. (in the boot)
From VIN F20645 the sending unit is accessed from the EVAP flange on top of the tank.

Completely different units with different mountings.
