Fuel system relay

Fuel system relay
Last night I started my 2000 XJ8. It ran but then just died. It sounded funny turning over when I tried to restart it. This morning I went out and discovered I did not have a fuel pump sound. It wasn't easy but I finally found where the relay is. Still not sure about the fuse. I took the relay apart to figure out what the terminals did. I got everything figured out. I have 12 v power going into the fuse block yet it will not activate the coil through the fuse block. Connected straight to the battery it works good. I can force the contacts close and the fuel pump runs and I can start the car. Why can't it work when plugged in and I have 12 v to the coil?

Did you put a jumper in place of the relay, or did you put the relay back in? The relay for the fuel pump is in the trunk fuse box, the relays make a T shape. The line going from left to right, its the second relay starting from left. The relays are date coded, and are supposed to be updated with newer ones. If you pull back the carpet at the front part of the trunk that hides the fuel tank, you should be able to disconnect the connector at the top and check to see if you're getting 12v to the pump. If not, then you could have a wiring problem between the fuel tank and fuse box in the trunk, or the fuse box itself, or the relay itself is faulty. Do you have the ignition on when checking power at the relay?

My advise is to put a 'JUMPER WIRE' with male terminal ends on it and place it in the boot fuse/relay box somewhere safe. You know what relay it is and then you can 'JUMP' terminals 30/87 (3/5 if they are marked that way) to get your butt home.
The best you can hope for is that it fails completely when you have time to diagnose and repair. Intermittent failures are maddening and you are never sure if it is repaired.
A total failure of the circuit is easier to find.

The inertial cut off switch is located in the passenger side footwell; you will need to pull the plastic bulkhead away to access it just in front of the door. Great explanation in the drivers handbook (if you don't have it, download it from the stickies).
If you can't find the electrical diagram, here it is.

I was trying to repair without the electrical guide. Now I have it, Thanks Jim. The car runs great now. I swapped some solenoids around so that might have been the issue. My error code even said a fuel pump solenoid had failed. I will be buying a spare one and keeping the replaced one handy. I do have a new problem. The radio does not work now. Could that be connected somehow to my previous issue? All fuses look good. If it aint one thing it's another.
