A wire should never be hot.
Aside from a short, you might have a loose connection or a break in the wire.
If moving the wire helps, then look at both ends of the wire and make sure that the connecting surfaces are clean and that the connection is tight.
If you disconnect the battery, wait one hour, reconnect the battery, wait 15 minutes and check the wire again without doing anything else, and it is again hot, then you have excessive current draw beyond the wire.
It is not a battery problem, it is a wiring problem.
