Gearbox Fault

Aaron *** here from Nashville TN.
I have an automatic 2001 Vanden Plas. Left hand drive. No Supercharger.
I believe the Transmission was replaced in 2015 @ 140,000 thousand miles. It's at 182,900 now. (my father just gave me this car to work on. He's the one who had the Transmission replace. Not sure if it was a new one, refurbished one, or just a swapped one...
My issue is I was driving the other day and I stopped at a light, when the light turned green I gave it gas and the engine started spooling like it was in neutral. There was a loud BANG! And the car started moving forward slowly, and then got faster (I think I was stuck in 3rd gear) The Gearbox Fault light came on immediately, I was able to make a U-Turn and head back to my house about a mile away. The car drove fine for third gear, but wouldn't change gears at all.
Currently it idles forward, and reverse is completely fine.
The BANG sounded like it came from the rear driveshaft/differential area. Not saying this is where it originated, just saying that it sounded like it came from behind me.
Another piece to this puzzle was about a month ago on a really cold morning (not too many of those in Nashville) I started the car and it displayed the gearbox fault on the dash. The car warmed up and I turned it off and back on and the light didn't turn back on.
Any ideas on where to start would be super helpful!

Are there any DTCs in the system? If so, post them here.
Start with simple things first to eliminate the obvious. Use a voltmeter to check the battery voltage across the terminals with the ignition in the OFF position. It should be a minimum of 12.6 volts. If not, charge the battery and retest.
