Question "Gearbox Fault"! Is it the cable or is the Linear switch?

Hello All. I a m ad odds as to what is happening. I have a 2001 XJR WITH 145k on it. Car drives like a champ when everything is good..

I recently started having problems with the shifter so i went to the process of taking the doghouse out and removing and cleaning the j-gate linear switch and inspecting the cable. The cable does not appear stretched as i have often heard.
The weird thing is this. The car kicks into "restricted performance" after a gearbox fault. I then have to turn the car off a couple of times to get to kinda like reset itself. Too many mistakes and i have to clear the OBD to get it out of that mode.

Is it possible that the switch is bad? Or is it possible that the shifter is off? Could it it be that the cable needs adjustment to work properly? I have also heard about the mini switches. Do they have an impact on this issue?

I really need to nail this down, because i cant go through the process of taking that doghouse apart too many more times.

Any suggestions anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you get a P0705 it is ususally the switch.

I wonder, what do you think about a new vs used part on this item? They are not easy to find. I can see why. The hassle to get to it, while not too bad is a headache for something that appears to need replacing after a while. I opened this one and cleaned up the contacts a lubed with a little dielectric grease. Work ok but still has issues. Do these go bad often in your opinion?

I did the same. Ended up buying a used one from an 03 super V8. No problem since. The console will have to be removed to access.

Just after I bought mine, I kept having this same problem. At first, my son tried quickly shifting from park to drive and that seemed to bypass the problem. It would occasionally go into gearbox fault mode but as you experienced by turning the ignition off and on again that would temporarily fix the problem. Then, all of a sudden, the problem went away and we haven't had it happen again since(knock on wood) and it's been 2 months. Just lucky I guess.....But on purpose we don't use the left side of the J gate just in case that could cause this problem to resurface. BTW, we were getting a code 706 which could be adjustment of selector cable, D4 switch dislocation/failure, etc.
