Unhappy Gearbox fluid change price ?

Asked for a quote today for a fluid change in the gearbox.
Came back to me with £30.00 per ltr for the atf then there is a filter and gasket plus labour.
Is this about right £30.00 per ltr? Sounds steep to me.

Are you after Mobil / Esso ATF LT 71141 in 1 litre packs?

Cheapest I can find in the UK (Nov 6th 2012) is £11.29 per litre with free delivery:

Roy,

I took the fluid reference LT 71141 from JTIS.

There's been a lot of debate and diverse opinion expressed on the forum about what to use. Mainly for the same reason as you found - shock at the cost.

You have the ZF5HP24 Transmission - check this link from XK8/XKR section on fluid choice:

Automatic transmission Fluid - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

US members may have a different brand available but, unless UK members chip in with further information, it appears this is still the one to use.

I can supply the correct stuff for a fraction of that quote. Frightening.

Frankly that is absolutely rediculous!

There has been much said about what to use in these boxes and frankly, considering that the specifications were laid down some 16 years ago, there has been many advances in modern gearbox oil technology.

I personally have had excellent results from Castrol Transmax-Z which is full synthetic and meets and exceeds the original Esso LT71141.
I have used this oil for the last six years with two complete hydraulic flushes and is a fraction of the cost of so called specialist oil demeanded by these boxes.

This should be easily available in the UK.
Any auto box specialist worthy of the name should be able to perform a complete hydraulic flush which changes the entire oil not just what is in the pan.
The boxes hold a total of 10 litres from dry.

If you do a pan drop and filter change you only remove around 4.5 litres and you need to do at least three oil changes this way to change the entire system.
The use of a hydraulic flushing machine does it in one hit.

Choose a repuatble firm and not some cheap back yarder....discuss it with them and I'm sure you will have a successful outcome for a fraction of the prices you have been quoted.
You can have the oil changed every three years and the box will last for ever.))

hydraulic flushing can cause more issues by forcing crud through the gearbox and takes more than 10 litres to do correctly. A gentle partial fluid change is much safer.
