Gearbox Interchangeability (3.2/4.0)
Hi Everyone,
My 2002 3.2SE appears to be suffering from the common gearbox maladies that so often affect our cars. I have been offered a used gearbox from a 4.0 version (same year) with a guarantee. From looking on the Jaguar parts list it appears that the part numbers are different. It seems that the Control Valve assembly numbers differ. Does anyone know if that is the only difference and, more importantly, will said gearbox work OK with my 3.2 car (I can't see any other differences).
Thanks everyone - Keith

Thanks 'Sean B'. I thought it would but didn't want to go to all the hassle of changing if there was even a small chance that it would create problems - I wonder why the valve body is a different part number and, consequently, the gearbox numbers ?? Have you any experience of such a swap ??
Hi 'Flay'. Symptoms are starting off and staying in (I think) fourth gear. Drives perfectly smooth, although it doesn't go up and down the gears. If I get the 'gearbox failure' light on dash and reset it with my scanner tool it will start off in lower gears but changes up harshly, and then stays in fourth gear. The 'gearbox failure' light then comes back on and I'm once again stuck in fourth gear. When it starts off in lower gears (after reset) it feels as though the gears are slipping.
I've tried checking the fluid level (following correct procedure) and found that it was over-filled when cold (about a litre came out). In the next couple of days I'm going to re-check fluid level at 40 deg. to see if that helps. I've also checked and adjusted the gearchange cable as per the Jaguar manual but that has made no difference.
Obviously, I don't really want to have to change the box unless I have to, as its a big job (done it before on another car). So, if anyone can offer some further advice as to the likely cause I'd be grateful. The car is a 2002 model, so I believe it shouldn't suffer from the common 'A' drum failure ??? Or could it be that ??? The total mileage of car (gearbox as well, I think) is 101,000 miles.
Thanks everyone - I'd welcome ANY advice. Regards Keith

Hi, you can read the bellow thread, and may find a lot of answers to your problem. I have the same year and engine, only 82 k miles and I am trying to find the best solution to avoid a gearbox failure; oil changed already 2 times after 62k miles.

Thanks Flay.
I'll have a read of that link later today. So many of these cars now end up being broken for parts due to gearbox issues (with a high mileage car, the value is more in parts than the cost of a gearbox rebuild). On the plus side, it will mean lots of parts available and that the value of good cars will probably stabilise/increase.
Makes you wonder how difficult it would be to put an XJR gearbox into an XJ8 (Obviously you'd probably need the gearbox ECU as well). Those boxes are certainly stronger than the ZF ones. Has anyone on this forum done such a change ??

Replacing broken gearbox on my 1999 XK8
Hi Sean B,
I saw that you replied to a similar message, years ago (2008), on the same issue.
I got a working XJ8 3.2 gearbox to replace the broken one on my XK8 4.0.
I would appreciate if you could let me know what I should be careful about when it comes to differences between the two gear boxes - is there anything I should be aware of with regards to gearbox set up, gear ratio differences, etc.
Thanks in advance.
