Default Gearbox issues?

Hi all,

Thought I'd join this forum to try and get some advice, so here goes...

I have an R reg 3.2 V8, which I bought at a rediculously low price for parts - I am using the engine for my MGBGT, but that is another story for another time. The reason the car was so cheap was that the gearbox has had it.

While stripping the Jag, I have been extremely ipressed with the quality of the car overall - it is beautifully put together, I swear the bits of metal holding the radio in are more substantial than the bumper mounts on my old Pajero!

The long and the short of it is that I have fallen in love with the thing, and am now actively looking for a nice one, preferably a V8 XJR, but maybe a 4.2?...

The thing is, the gearbox repair on the 3.2 would have been properly expensive, and I am wondering if this is a common problem that I might fall into? Something about the A clutch breaking I think?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved

Regards etc

Steve

I am not sure if the same transmission was used in the later 4.2 cars, but I am sure that the X-300 XJR uses a GM transmission and the X-308 XJR uses a Mercedes Benz transmission, neither with any frequent failures. Check the archives for particulars on the MB gearbox used in the XJR.
