Looking at the maintenance chart in JTIS, here are some tidbits that might not be generally known:

1. windshield wiper refill renewal - every 10,000 miles

2. differential halfshaft greasing - every 10,000 miles

3. sparkplug replacement - every 30,000 miles

** except North America at 100,000 miles for NA and 60,000 miles for SC, or leaded gas at 10,000 miles

So, either North American unleaded gas is far superior to other markets, or other markets are harder on plugs, or the spec is to satisfy EPA requirements.

But, it seems to a casual observer that it would be reasonable for someone more interested in gas mileage, performance, and general engine health to change plugs at 30,000 miles.

A 100,000 mile sparkplug life is either a marketing or regulatory myth.

As for the 10,000 mile halfshaft lubrication interval, does it really get done when you drop it off at the shop? Maybe, maybe not.

Not sure of the original publication date -- or the updates.

Many markets outside of North America and Western Europe had questionable fuel -- so that may account for the plug type and change interval.

This is a not uncommon interval for other manufacturers. Plugs can last that long without a lot of problems, other than stripping the spark plug hole threads in the head when they are finally removed. I'm pretty new on this forum, but haven't read about any such problems here, so maybe the Jag engine isn't as susceptible to the issue. (Changed mine at 39,000/11 years to be safe... was a bit concerned about the length of time.)

Bob,

A question I have long had regarding the axle universal joints . . . I notice that the '98 and '99 checklists call for lubrication of the half shaft universal joints while the '00 drops that requirement. Did Jaguar start using sealed u-joints or just quit greasing them?

I guess I never noticed. I lube the joints when I perform a maintenance. I don't remember any X308 or X100 without the grease zerks.

The other models used CV joints.
