I have a new to me 1999 Jaguar Vanden Plas 49,000 miles and I am really pleased, my first Jag. Done regular upkeep work, brakes, fluids etc but had a nagging dragging sound. Finally brought it to my indy and put it on the hoist in drive and with a stethoscope it was diagnosed as a bad Driveshaft Center Support Bearing. For the life of me I cannot find the assembly complete nor can I find the bearing specs to have a new one pressed in.
Did find this:
"the hanger bearing is not sold for a 98 and up but it is sold for a 95 to 97 xj6 and i have removed and replaced the hanger bearings before and used a 95 xj6 hanger bearing and sleeve cover for slip splines and it has worked fine 5 time so far. "
I have a brand new one that fits the 1999 S-Type. It also fits on my 05 XJ8. Not sure if it would fit yours though. I was planning on installing it, but the issue turned out to be something else. Brand new sitting in a box. PM me if you can verify it will fit your car.
As a side note the Jag Bits fella says you need to buy the whole drive shaft and he gets calls all the time for the hanger bearing. He has never had someone use the above xj6 carrier bearing for a xj8
My guts say yes given the predeliction of manufacturers
to raid the old parts bins.
You could go find a friendly indy with a X300 on the lift
and compare. That would be the most reliable way.
Or, post a new thread along the lines of
Will a X300 hanger bearing fit a X308.
That might twig someone's memory.
Copy paste the above info into that post
to make it easier.
edit:
I will remind you that you yourself started with this:

Sounds like a plan plums, I will order a 95 xj6 hanger bearing EBC9040 and give it a go. Tell me something, do I need to get a "95 xj6 sleeve cover for slip splines"?
What does "i have removed and replaced the hanger bearings before and used a 95 xj6 hanger bearing and sleeve cover for slip splines and it has worked fine 5 time so far. " mean to you?
My interpretation is that the writer has done it five times
with success.
The sleeve cover does seem like it might be critical. Perhaps
a different size than on the X308. It might be in the "unillustrated parts"
or "prop shaft" section of the page you quoted:

Default RE: DENNIS'S POST - GREASING Propshaft Center Support Bearing
GREASING Propshaft Center Support Bearing
As you all know, this seems to be a commonproblem with the X-type (all years) and many here have replaced their entire Prop shaft as a result of the Center Support bearing failing or begins to howl, vibrate and whine.
First of all, KUDOS goes to Chas944, for giving me tips and inspiration to do this in this post HERE.
Mine was not showing any signs of failure or noise, so this was preventive maintenance to prolong it's life...
I found the bearing outside caked in hardened old grease and there was surely not much left inside..I cleaned both side off, so I could make out where the rubber seal and bearing housing met..the front side (side towards the front of the car) had no visible entry points or means of penetrating to inject grease...The back side (side facing the rear of the car) has little notches in the rubber seal on the edge where it meets the metal bearing casing..These notches are at 6 o'clock, 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock...I'm sure there is one at 12 o'clock, but not able to get at it..
TOOLS and SUPPLIES

*Grease Gun HOSE about 18" long
*18 Gauge Grease Injection Needle

Grease:
Note: Warm grease in hot water to about 100 degrees F, to make it flow easier out the needle.

Insert Grease Needle (it goes in about half way)into the 6 o'clock notch on the rear side of bearingand pump until you see new grease oozing out from the bearing on the front side..

Continue with the other two postions (10 o'clock and 2 o'clock)in the same way..

Wipe off all the excess and be on your way with a freshly Greased Bearing.

So what was the conclusion to all this? Did the EBC9040 part from the X300 fit on to your 1999 X308?
The rubber mounting in mine seems have gone a bit soft. I can get movement of 5 mm (~1/4") of the central bearing relative to the outer mount with not much force which seems a bit excessive to me.
The conclusion was that it was a huge to do to have the part replaced and I was told they rarely fail. So I found a low mileage x308 at the breakers and bought the entire driveshaft. The job to replace is not difficult but they had to cut the exhaust to get access. All is good
