Harmonic Balance Puller

Harmonic Balance Puller
Quick question here....has anyone used the OTC 518 harmonic balance puller? This appears to be a self-centering type puller and is a direct sub for Ford use (I assume for the Jaguar engine equivalent used in Fomoco/Lincoln applications.) http://www.amazon.com/OTC-518-Harmon...5914979&sr=1-1

It looks pretty beefy, but can't say I have used that same one. I used a pretty cheap set from Harbor Freight and it got me through the job, but it did some bending before it was all over. About the time I thought something was going to break, a few gentle mallet taps and she slid right off.

Hi Tez, I mentioned the crank removal tool, there's a crank locking tool that slips into where the crank position sensor it bolted, a cam locking tool to keep timing correct. And a cam tension tool. All four make this a breeze. I've learnt the hard way about not using the right stuff in the past.....
Now because this is common, there'll be someone on here that could loan or sell you the tools. Post in the engine section??
See here for prices and what they look like

Actually, the Jaguar literature and a number of posters here have warned against using the crank positioner tool as a locking device for removing the dampner. I have used the tool for this purpose, and apparently did not screw anything up, put the metal slot where the tool fits is not very strong and messing it up will affect the timing pulse and possibly wipe out the CKS.

I do not have the Jaguar service manual electronically, but a direct quote from alldata which is pretty much a copy of the Jaguar literature (noit JTIS) :
"CAUTION: Under no circumstances should the crankshaft setting peg 303-531 be used in the following operations, to lock the crankshaft. NOTE: Should extra locking of the crankshaft be required, use a lever against one torque converter boss. Remove the plastic mesh cover from the torque converter housing for access. Install the crankshaft locking tool to the damper. Install adapter 303-191-03 to the main locking tool 303-191 Reposition the crankshaft/damper to align the mounting holes and install the locking tool to the damper using the bolts provided with the tool. Loosen, but do not remove the damper securing bolt from the crankshaft. "
There is a Jaguar crankshaft locking tool tthat bolts to the damper with an adapter as referenced above.

That tool was liated at a couple hundred $$ , so I passed. I thought about building one, but I have a large Rigid strap wrench and used it on the damper itseld. I was afraid of separating the damper (I THINK it has a rubber isolator), but with the strap wrench and a 23ft pipe and a 36" breaker bar, I was able to break the damper bolt loose before something else gave way.
