Harsh Over Drive and Harsh Engagement into drive
Hello All!
I just recently replaced my forward drum as it cracked and failed. After reinstalling the unit and filling it with fluid, it drives great except 2 small things.
It is engaging into drive rather harshly and it is going in and out of overdrive (5th ratio) poorly. Its almost as if one of the pressure regulator solenoids has gone bad and is stuck wide open. I've experienced this with a Subaru, but it was slamming into all gears just not overdrive. I've been trying to find a diagram of what solenoids are cycled during key operations to see if they share a common solenoid.
Any assistance would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum from another Atlanta area member.. You're way ahead of me on servicing the transmission, but I am planning on working on one belonging to a friend next month, so I'll be following your thread. Did you replace the valve body?

I have a 2003 XJ. I was able to obtain a scan tool that could read the TCM and determine that the temperature sensor is operating properly. That leads me to replace the valve body. One of the pressure sensors is reading constant system voltage (wide open), even when engaging gear with indicates one of the spool valves in the valve body is worn. I've found a company that sells remanufactured valve bodies for around $500. I will keep everyone posted. I also found a form of a TSB from a transmission supply company that would indicate that the valve body is the whole reason the forward drum cracks in the first place. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...re-info-88369/ If you go there an open the PDF, it describes the exact condition and the solution. It appears that there could be a repair kit, but I don't think that will correct my over drive condition.

I have replaced the subject valve in my car and one other. The valve body bore appeared to be in good condition on both cars, so it may prevent drum failure, but neither of us indulges in stop light competition. When in second gear I do not hold back.
