Default Head gasket

Aright lads. Head gasket gone on my xj8 sovereign. Do I change both head gaskets? And can someone tell me where is best to buy the timing tool from? I am in Aberdeen Scotland. Any advise on this job greatly appreciated. Thanks steve

Most definitely replace them both with the later 4.2 MLS head gaskets.

Everyone will just tell you to look up the zip tie method on a search here for the camshaft timing. The shop I work at already has the timing tools so I've never tried the zip tie method myself.

The zip tie method is for replacing the secondary tensioners, not for removing heads. You need the timing tools and should have the JTIS21 repair manual from the Sticky or a DVD/CD.

You can also download my copy of the Jaguar Training Engine Coarse 168.
It is on the forum somewhere and I sent it to GUS so he will have it on his site.

I usually use Jaguar RTS (Repair Time Search). The application was first called ROT (Repair Operation Times) but then Jaguar issued several changes to the CD based program.

The RTS is for WARRANTY TIMES so we used to use that time, times time and a half.

(eg 4 hours X 1.5= 6 hours)

That is closer to REAL WORLD labor times. Factory Warranty Time is some engineers fantasy.

I might have included it on a DVD I sent to GUS and he might have it on his web site??

You might find a labor time in Mitchell, Chilton or some other Labor Time Guide.

Bob, there are few if any members of this forum that have your skills and experience to do the headgaskets in 6 hours. And you will have the proper tools to remove the balancer and to time the motor.

I think adc1903 is probably referring to how long it might take him and as he said he never worked on jags before.

I would at least plan on a weekend for someone doing it the first time. That is assuming you have all of the parts you need preorder. But it could possibly take more than a week. More than likely some part will be wrong, you will find something else that needs to be repaired, or you'll break some part in the process. Then you will have to order these items and that will take time. I found working on these cars that very seldom does it go smoothly.

Don't want to scare you but be prepared for unexpected things to pop up. If this happens to be your only car I don't want you to think you can start it Friday night and expect to have it for the Monday commute.

Lol. I am looking forward to the challenge. I think I will change the chains as well when in there. Thanks again for replys. Most of you lads seem to be from the states? No Scotsmen on here lol

The 6 hour reference was and EXAMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (eg)
I did NOT state that the warranty time was 6 hours.

According to my version of RTS, Jaguar Warranty time to replace 2000MY 4.0 V8 HEAD GASKET, ENGINE SET is 11.2 HOURS. (plus diagnosis+Drive-Drive-out)

The real world time would be closer to 17 hours (11.2 X 1.5 = 16.8) plus diagnosis .3 and Drive-Drive-out .1

16.8 + .4 (or maybe .6 using the formula) = 17.2 (or 17.4)

When we did warranty repairs at the Jaguar dealer we were ONLY paid WARRANTY time. 11.2 (plus diagnosis+Drive-Drive-out) = 11.6.

Sometimes we got creative and found other ways to increase the repair time but mostly you just worked at it and took it in the butt!!!!!

CUSTOMER PAY was warranty time, times 1.5.
Sometimes we had Chilton or Mitchell time guides if the repair was common.

SIX minutes is all you get for 'drive-in-drive-out' and you only get it ONE TIME and NOT AT ALL if there are customer pay repairs on the same repair order.

Manufacturers do not like to pay for repairs.

I know.

I started as the guy shuffling the cars into some pretty tight
spots in the morning. Sometimes it took me more than six
minutes just to get it into the tighter spots.

But, the guys there had it easier than some since they'd just
send me to get the r/o, keys, parts and put the car on the hoist.
