Headlamp Issue

First thing would be to check the supply at the lamps. Then find the relay and check that. Further, check the fuses related to the lamps, then finally the actual switch on the wheel.
If you get your post count up to 10 I think, you'll be able to access the wiring diagrams, or have a look in the sticky for further guidance on the electrical system.

Thanks Sean. What do you mean if I get the post count up to 10? 10 views or 10 posts? I tend to read on here much more than post.
I was searching on these symptons and did see the exact same issue on another thread - but no solution (it was a different subject). That makes me think this is probably not that all unusual. It certainly is a unique set of circumstances.

Oh boy. I just developed the same problem but I am in Cape Cod 5 hours from home. Was on vacation. Now know how I will be spending weekend. They worked fine yesterday. Tonight outer headlights non functioning. To get headlights have to use center high beams. Not appreciated by others. I checked all the fuses. These were ok. Found the relay and swapped with another one. No change. The front left fuse box smells hot!! Could not feel anything or see anything but electrical smell. That can't be good. Headlights won't come on with remote. Everything else works great. I'm stumped, it's dark and a long way from home. Please help! Just noted that the high beams work with left stick pushed forward but still not low beams.

Hi
I am not sure what relays you swapped. According to the Fusebox relays diagram, you should try swapping Relay number 3 (head lamps - high beam) with Relay number 5 (head lamps - low beam).
You might have a battery/ground issue - look at post#1 (head lights started to dim) then post# 3 (how to check battery grounding) then post# 4 (negetive cable was burning hot) in the Intermittent electrical power thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...l-power-60446/
If it is not a relay or fuse problem, then it could be a low beam open circuit problem. If it is then the column headlamp switch and the wiring from the switch to the low beam head lamps need to be tested (then repaired or replaced).

Walter - $340 later I learned I had a loose wire. It must be prone to happen because I've seen similar threads but no specific solution. I couldn't wait any longer and I'm not at all savvy with a multimeter. In the end, it was a 2-minute solder job by a local mechanic (and 4 hours of tracing). I'd start at the column switch. Pretty sure that was it. Good luck.

Oh boy.... again..... Well. I'm not sure what caused this but both of the bulbs blew out at the same time. I replaced them $18.00 at local Cape Cod Auto parts store. They work, and that is good but! I have had headlights go within days if each other but not the same time. The reason i'm nervous is that the day before they were dim and I remember wondering if one was out but I could see both beams reflect back and the running lights in car in front if me. There is a post above talking about this dimming and grounding. For now I will have to watch. I will check back with any changes. Thank guys for the input as I was not the calmest being far from home on a weekend where blue laws happen. Will keep you posted.

Here are 2 wiring diagrams for X308 XJ:
First one shows the front lamp wiring in the Lamp Stalk (click on the image to get a better/larger viewing image):
The other shows the front Lamp wiring at the LH side front Lamp unit (click on the image to get a better/larger viewing image):
The wiring color symbols are U for Blue; UY for Blue with Yellow stripe; R for Red; YG for Yellow with Green stripe; WG for White with Green stripe and O for orange
Hope this helps
