Unhappy headliner repair in NY

Good morning, My 1999 vanden plas headliner is sagging just over the rear seat,I have read posts about this problem and wondered if there is a way to unfasten headliner from rear window, scrape out bad foam-replace foam-reglue. Has anyone ever tried this? Rest of headliner is fine, sunroof, sides, all fine.some posts say entire headliner board can be gotten out of back door of v/p, some say rear window must be removed-NIGHTMARE! As this seems to be such a common problem, has anyone come up with a better, easier way of fixing this. Such a beautiful car, cant even use back seat until this is fixed. Don't want to use saggystoppers-not a good look-damage to material . If no new results, fix available , does anyone know of a shop or specialist who deals with these model jaguars.I live Westchester county, NY.would an upholsterer be able to repair rear section, without doing entire headliner. Anyone have guesstimates as to approximate cost to have this done properly in NY area? very frustrating! Thank you in advance for any help/advice.

Rob, I live in white plains, how close.

try this

Heads Up Industries Saggy Stoppers Emergency Headliner Fasteners - JCWhitney

the tip is clear and I sprayed painted to match up, the result is better than expected for a cheap but good fix.

otherwise there are a few shops around and cost about 300 to 500

I did it myself in my 2000 XJR. You can get it out of the back door opening, even in a short wheelbase car, as they use a flexible mat material that will flex and fold to an extent. I just removed all of the trim holding it in, put the seatbacks forward, and ran the seats all the way forward, and I was able to get it out. After that, I removed the old fabric and scrubbed the old foam off. I bought 2 yards of 60" wide foam-backed headliner fabric from a local fabric/sewing store. I then applied 3M Headliner Contact Cement to the fabric and the headliner board. I used the dowel standoff method (lay dowels every foot or so to keep the fabric and the board from contacting), which made it quite easy as you can do one section at a time. You just remove a dowel, and work one direction pressing it on, being sure to stretch the fabric as little as possible. when it's all done, then just trim around the edges (be sure to leave a few inches around the sunroof hole, you glue it to the sunroof frame), and reinstall. All in all it took me around 3-4 hours and ~$70 to do it myself, it looks great, and after 6 months, some of it ridiculously hot, no problems to report. It's not too bad to do yourself, but if you don't feel confident about recovering it yourself, I'd at least take it out yourself so you can take the removed liner to an interior shop. It will only be about $200 for them to recover it when it's out of the vehicle, as opposed to more than twice that if they have to do all the labor to remove/reinstall it as well. Good luck!

Default Go for it

I used the fix that vincent661983 suggested but will be re-gluing the headliner as a future project during this winter as my XJ8 will not be driven much then.
So Cabezagrande reply is very useful as well.
The links listed are a great help too.

I am assuming....you have taken care of this...its a common problem for these models and years 97-2003 especially.....but even my older 85.....xj6 had it.......I currently have 2 xjxs.....one base aND ONE L MODEL....the base is beginning to sag......you can do a self repair on this if you are careful and work slowly.....short of replaceing the entire headliner.....check out u-tube....

what you use makes all the difference.....here I would suggest use of upholstery buttons ....with the pin portion looking like a squiggly pig tail......would try this first...before spending 500-600 on on new liner and install.
