Headliner Replacement Question
#21
I used Saggy Stoppers:
Amazon.com: Heads Up HU850 Saggy Stoppers Fasteners: Automotive
Worked & The sagging headliner in the back seat could no longer droop down! But, I KNEW it was there & it was only a temp fix for me. So, I paid a professional upholstery shop to replace the headliner. ($310 total) Not the sun roof liner. That would have been $50 extra at the time & even more if I later did it. But, as explained by the shop, the sun roof headliner was already completely sagging . I.E. not glued at all. However, due to the small area the full droop was barely noticeable & not a problem unless your head is almost touching the roof. Mine is NOT. It cannot sag any farther. This is not the case for the rest of the headliner although in the XJ8s it is common to sag above the rear seats where the roof has that upwards angle to allow for headroom for the rear seat passengers. The color match is not perfect but, it is very close to the sun visors & sun roof OEM material. Only I can tell if I look very closely. I am very satisfied with the color match.
There are online videos, tutorials to DIY. Getting the roof board out of the car & back in is the tricky part & I didn't want to bother. Put all thoughts of somehow re-gluing the portions that sagged out of your head. Once you see how to do the replacement you will see why the material must be trashed & the board scrubbed b4 new material is glued down. You probably will have to bend the board to get it out of the car & ask the upholstery shop if they intend to bend it. Mine still has a visible slight crease where they bent it & I'm not thrilled about that since they failed to mention it.

Not sure you CAN order Jag Headliners. When I went to dealer to replace my headliner they said they send the cars to an Upholstery shop & gave me the name of who they use. You can ask. I imagine dye lots vary & colors fade & suppliers change especially after many years so, an exact, perfect match is not possible.

Oatmeal headliner material
I did the job my self. Found a perfect aftermarket fabric match for the "oatmeal" interior from yourautotrim.com Color is PH1784 Sand Gray. This fabric is available from a number of suppliers that can be found with a google search. It is difficult to remove and reinstall the headliner board without bending (i.e., folding) it to get it out of the rear passenger door. There are instructions on how to do this on the net -- just do a search. I was quoted $600 us by an upholstery shop, but the color of the fabric they wanted to install didn't match. Good luck.
