Default Heater issue on my 98 XJ8 L

Hi all,

Bought this car recently in Florida. The heater blows but just doesn't blow heat. Maybe I should say the fan blows. It's now a NY car so obviously needs to blow heat now!

Any ideas on the issue? My mechanic mentioned something about a valve that connects or a motor? He may have to call a Jaguar specialist for $50. Hoping to avoid that charge if you guys can help me.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, $50 could be the least of your problems. There is not only a valve, but also a heater pump, which is prone to failure but can be rebuilt. Another problem often encountered is the heater core becoming plugged with sediment, but it can usually be flushed. Unfortunately, access is difficult and labor costs fairly high, while the cost of replacing the pump is shocking.
If you do a search of the forum for heater failure using the search function you will find a wealth of information.

Any ideal what parts may cost? Plus, how many hours of labor?

Hi
I also had a problem with no heat on our 2001 XJ8.
I realised we had heating issue in early October 2012.

Our local indy shop noticed that the automatic control part of the Climate Control Module was not working and we had it replaced with a used one.

Then we found that the electric aux heating pump was burning out the fuses and replaced the electric pump with a used one.

Also found a coolant leak coming from the Coolant Outlet Pipe and we purchase a new one.

Finally we found that the heating system was clogged and had it flushed 2 times before it gave really good heat.

Here are the details of the costs and other information related to resolving the issue (about $530 including cost of coolant).

Climate Control Assembly (Module) Labor time std 1.8 hours

Used Climate Control Module - Nationwide Auto Recycling $50 plus $14.95 shipping

Labor - replace Aux Heater Pump $50 (Labor time std 1.5 hours) took indy shop less time to change it.

Used Aux Heater Pump -European Automotive (online) part# MNC6710AC $112

Labor - replace Coolant Outlet Pipe $30 - New part cost $53 (part# AJ85885)

Removed Coolant Expansion Tank and flushed out Heater system twice (2.0 hrs) $120
Indy shop also had to remove and clean (flush) both no-return valves.

Here are 2 other forum threads on the Heating system:

I have more information of the electric aux heater pump if you need it. I did not have much success finding replacement brushes or getting the correct diode information.

Thanks for the info guys! I forwarded this thread to my mechanic.

Frankly, I think I am regretting buying this car. Hopefully I won't have any issues for a while.

Same issue here with my 2001 XJ8.... no heat. Replaced the heater pump but turned out old one was working fine (oh well, I have a spare when one of them does eventually die on me). This week-end going to check the valve unit. But chances are greater that the heater core is clogged and will need to flush. I am in NC but heading to NY early Feb... and need heat as Paulpop72 wisely suggests!! ;-) Hey, Paulpop72, don't regret your purchase. You purchased a fine automobile :-)

Hi Guys
I also found this article on the internet Heating issues in Jaguar - only it written for the 03 thru 08 S-Type with photos and information but I still think some of it also pertains to our XJ series Jaguars:

S-Type no heat testing (gives reason why the Climate Control Module fails - Heater Valve faulty (clogged?)) causes it draw too much current that damages the Climate Control Module.

No regrets!

Buying the used automobile from out of state is always dicey. VERY few sellers are honest about what the car will need immediately, to be roadworthy. I don't know if OP had the opportunity to fly to FLA and test drive it, or bought it "sight unseen" and had it shipped to NY. There is a comprehensive (and extensive!) "check list" when one is buying a used car (and a used Jag especially!). If I was test driving, I would KNOW the status of the HVAC unit, and if no heat was discovered, I would offer $1000 less than I was prepared to offer if everything works as it should.

Even then,.....one can buy a prefectly functioning car, and have some major component go bad in few days! That's the risk one needs to calculate with. But,.....buying a fine automobile for 5-10 K (instead of 60-80K!!) assumes a LOT of risks. And in this case,......clogged heater core is nothing to worry about. I would have it flushed (most likely DIY), and go from there. If that doesn't produce the heat, I'd go down the line. If it costs 5-6 bills, so what? It's still FAR CRY from 60-80K that will depreciate 40% in three years.
