Help! Jag dealer couldnt fix it
Hi, my xj8 2000 spent 7 weeks at the jag dealer before I kidnapped it home. The fuel, Speedo and rev gauges don’t work, all the warning lights are on, and loads of messages go round and round. Can’t put into gear without stick something down that wee hole, and the back sensors don’t work. I believe the jag people put in a new abs module, and since I’ve had it I’ve put in a new instrument cluster. Same thing. History: I had trouble with the battery, in that many times the car would t start. I learned quickly that a wiggle of the terminal (+) wld let me start it again. The last time I did this is when the issues arrived. I can drive the car, I have no issues starting it (with battery) but it won’t go into gear unless I’m real quick (there’s a beeping sound) ...
so the million dollar question is: what’s wrong?
cheers

Inger, there must be a very good independent Jaguar shop some where in whichever island of New Zealand that has experience in much older cars. Need to search for one. Until then, guys like Bob are your best friends.
Mike update your signature data to show where you live and what car you have. I suspect we will see more of you on this forum.

HI, yes before all this went down the car wasnt always starting - no power - but then i learnt i could fiddle with the terminal connections adn it would start so i figured it was a connection issue ... the last time i tightened the connections, all this went down - the wanring lights, the guages not working, every warning messgae. Ironically i now have no problems starting the car, but im really keen to get the issue resolved not least so i can get a warrant. Ive been driving it, and i get the impression the power steering is feeling stiff (was so easy before) ....oh, and now my rear sensors arent working, and the radio sounds tinny like speakers have cut out too. sigh, cry.
oh ... and a few people (AA, ebbett Jaguar, a mechanic and technician) have tested the battery and believe it to be fine

Buy a new battery and put it on a trickle charger before you install. I have had a load test done on a battery and they said battery was fine. Issues still persisted. Installed a new battery and all was and still is good years later. If your mehanice did all this work without first replacing the battery shame on him. May or may not be your exact problem but insane not to try before throwing any more parts at it. When it comes to Jaguars do not trust a load test. The vast majority of all of Jaguars mythical "electrical problems" are nothing but a tired battery.
