Default Help, key will not turn in ignition or boot. Dead battery.

Hi and thanks in advance. I have a 2000 XJR that is new to me. I've tried to use a charger battery booster on the terminal under the bonnet and grounding to a shock tower bolt. What I find weird is key will not turn in ignition or in the boot. I also can't get the trunk to open using the key fob. Just replaced those batteries. I need access to the trunk to replace the battery is it normal for the keys not to turn?

If the cylinder isn't turned somewhat regularly....perhaps every 6-12 months...then they can corrode in place. Try to use some 3 in 1 oil, penetrating fluid or WD40 and let it sit for a couple hours and work it. Using the 3 in 1 oil also put a dab on the key to get it in the back of the cylinder.
Don't force anything, but if it turns a little just work that then add more fluid, wait and try working it again, a broken key isn't going to help.

To make things easier for you and us responding, go into your User CP and put your MY Jag info in your signature (see mine). This way you don't have to post what you have every time. Also, please put your location in...Euro/AU Jags have different options than NA Jags. This is a worldwide forum and so we don't feed you the wrong info and you get mad at us.

Are you aware that, to open the boot, you should turn the key clockwise. If the steering wheel is locked in an orientation where it is left under some tension to one side, you need to turn the wheel slightly in an opposite direction before you try to turn the key to unlock it.

See page 109 for ignition key interlock solenoid

Move the shift selector slightly out of the park gate ( confirms not in park switch ) and with your finger does the key barrel click ?

jagxj2000.pdf (jagrepair.com)

There is a fuse X and Y

# 5 left heelboard fuse box

# 7 left heelboard fuse box

2 stop sign double hash is the ignition switch pin 3

12 stop sign single hash is the ignition switch pin 2

The crash switch is not involved but is the chip in key ?

This requires a good pin 5 on the car side of the ignition switch connector to have a good car frame ground
