Youtube is probably a good place to start, it's been done plenty of times in other cars.

First thing to do on your car is measure the hole the radio fits into, this will tell you how big your tablet needs to be. Then wire up a power supply, and get yourself an app that can automatically manage functions like turning on and off when you turn the car on and off.
I think the DIYMA forum will have LOTS of info as well

It appears I owe you an apology, you are in fact correct about the amp in 2000+ cars. I was using the wiring diagram from the 99 model, and the Premium system is very different.
The 2000+ cars use an ainet linked system, the same as the XK's, where the cd stacker is connected to the amp, rather than directly to the headunit.

This puts my headunit upgrade on the back burner for a while until I can do a proper upgrade, rather than just swapping to a premium unit and trying to hijack the line out

Default Has anybody tried this one yet?

Alpine - Digital Media Receiver - iLX-700

Alpine iLX-700. Double-DIN. iPhone and Apple bla bla bla. However:
  • Chassis Size (W x H x D) mm: 178 x 100 x 75.5 mm

Look at the pictures! If that is shallow enough to fit in an x308 dashboard, it could make upgrades a lot easier.

To AlexD:

Pardon how much later (than your post) I'm asking this here.

The radio cavity opening in my X308 XJR radio frame is 3 3/4" high. A 7" display is about 4 1/4" high including the frame. Is the display in that picture smaller than 7"? Seems like a lot of extra room to spare, like 1/2"?

I'm trying to get me a 7" display in my XJR (yeah, I said "display" and not necessarily a two-brick dual din...), but the OEM radio frame doesn't give me enough vertical room.

Thanks ahead for the info and regards,

Reinaldo

I finally have the answer to this dilemma that's given me so much pain, and which turns out to be all just because of stupid assumptions in my part. Ever since I saw pictures of TFT installs on an X308 I've kept assuming that they were 7" displays and nothing less. If those pictures that show the display in a very comfortable fit were making less and less sense during my painful efforts with my 7" project, I should've stopped and re-considered the facts, including the possibility that those TFT displays WERE NOT 7".

Finally, in reviewing this post once more, I came across the model # of the radio he was working on and, of course, and making all the sense in the world, it is, indeed, a 6.1" display and not a 7" display, clearly explaining not only why this radio here fits with room to spare, but also some other fancy X308 installs that I've seen in the Internet that now I realize they must also be 6.1" displays.

Too bad, but guess what's in my X308's dash nowadays...yes, a single din DVD receiver with a 7" TFT display. Of course, it wasn't easy by any means and I did have to do a small visual alteration to the bottom edge of the radio frame, a small price to pay for the joy of a larger display.

My old 5.2" display radio still shows on my XJR pictures gallery, but I'll be soon replacing them with new ones showing what may just be the only X308 in existence with a full 7" display. A nice complement for a very special ICE set up.

Cheers,

Reinaldo

If by "hijack" you mean removing the ainet cable from the car, why would you do that? (unless I'm grossly misinterpreting you here). On my 2002 XJR (Alpine "premium" system) I simply left the cable in the car and just added 4 pairs of new RCA cables going back to the trunk.

Cheers!

this

by "hijack" I mean I made a patch cable that goes between the headunit and ai-net cable that bypasses the cd stacker audio channels and runs to rca's, so I can plug my ipod into it

Got it! Thank you.

That just reminded me that the audio output from my i-pod is not working (the top audio port) and I need to plug the large bottom connector back to the car to verify if the damn thing is still working or it took a dive.

Cheers,

Reinaldo

dragging this back from the depths...

there's a new Alpine unit that looks interesting. 7" screen, but fits into a single din slot at the bottom!

Any retractable screen is a problem waiting to manifest, avoid lol. Professional shops have no problems fitting double dins in the X308s.

It's not a retractable screen. That's the actual shape of it. Almost exactly the same as our stock headunit

Yea you can't go wrong when you see the Alpine name, even after all these years they're still top quality.

Not sure if this list has been updated but it was @ one time car audio gospel lol.

I had Alpine grills, but then I swapped the entire interior from a wreck into it, which had had the premium stereo, so now it has Harman Kardon grills.

Of course, I'm running Arvus speakers, DLS and Sundown amps, RE sub, and an Alpine processor... so it's all moot really :P

No worries, mine's a mixture as well w/ Kenwood H.U. , Rockford Fosgate cabin speakers , Memphis Audio sub & amp.

It looks good & sounds awesome, that's all that matters in the long run lol.

That's kind of amazing - I was just looking at a Sony GT90 for a different car and thinking "Why couldn't they have made it the other way?"

Very similar to the one I bought. Fits nicely in the space vacated by the old unit. Just needs a little dressing at the sides. Easy swap on a non-premium car, slightly trickier with one, but I did put a compatible 5ch Alpine amp in the boot to make life a little easier.

Yours is the INE-W987D, which is a full double din unit, isn't it?

Do you have any pictures from the install, and how much work was required to clear the metal brace behind the factory headunit, and the abs sensor box behind it?
