Default How Many Bushings Do I Need?

Hello Gentlemen:

I'm replacing ALL the front suspension bushings and ball joints in my 2001 VDP. I already replaced the tie rod ends.

Would someone please list exactly what is needed and how many?

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but for the front suspension, there are 2 control arms on each side (an upper and a lower)... meaning 4 total control arms... and each requires 2 bushings, for a total of 8 correct?

Thank you very much...

SirJag, You are right, total of 8 bushings. There is a service technical bulleten 204-11, out on this with some good info and part numbers. If you can't find it here (I did, but who knows where now), let me know, and I will scan & e-mail to you. The part numbers for the top control arm should be CBC 5523 (4 total). The lowers appear to be different now from front to back. Tech bulletin has by VIN number, but should be MNE 1360AB for the front, and MNE 1360BB for the rear of the lower control arm. Please compare to dealer or parts store to be sure. I bet Welsh Ent. 1-800-875-5247 has a kit for a decent price. They had all 4 ball joints in a kit for under $100. Tech bulletin has some good info on getting the lowers out. This same job is on my list of things to do as well. I'm going to have a warm up run with the shocks and stabilizer links first. Good luck.

Thanks a lot Rae. I'll contact Welsh. Sounds like their price for the ball joints is less than PartsGeek that wants over $200 for 4.

My mobile mechanic couldn't remove the shock bolt in the rear. Tried both a breaker bar and air gun. Rusted and frozen. I'll have to see if a commercial shop has, perhaps, a more powerful gun. Good luck with yours!

Default Look at SNG Barrett -USA Ball Joints & Bushings

Hi Sirjag
I think you might be able to save a little more at SNG Barrett website.
They have the original equipment mfg ball joints and bushings. Also aftermarket suppliers.

http://www.sngbarrattusa.com/catalogue/parts/show.asp?id=18385&keys=JLM21380&modelfamilyid=&cat egoryid=&stype=1&pagepos=0&back=n

JLM21380 OEM Lemforder upper ball joint $34.96
CBC5523 Jaguar OEM Upper wishbone bushings $37.00
MNC1350AA# OEM Lemforder Lower ball joint $39.96
MNE1360BB Genuine Jaguar lower wishbone bushings $18.76

Total parts cost for boths side for ball joints and bushings with shipping would be $382.34.

2 upper ball joints, 2 lower ball joints, 4 upper wishbone bushings and 4 lower wishbone bushings. $10.00 shipping.

$306.12 total cost with aftermarket parts from SNG Barrett. Here are the aftermarket part numbers:
MNC1350AA*, CBC5523U, CBC5523*, MNE1360BB*
They are about 50% lower cost than the OEM parts.

I also looked at the cost of new wishbones that includes the bushings and ball joints for upper/lower seems like over $1000 for both front sides.

I recently had my ball joints replaced . I suppose XJs have same amount of these stuffs . BTW, if you can find polyurethane bushings I highly recommend them (mine is rubber though ) , they outlast than that of rubber components

I used polyurethane on my 66 Mustang. While they do last foever, and they are slightly stiffer, they also tend to squeek more easily. Since my original ones had lasted about 20 years, I don't think I'd use polyurethane again. I prefer the quiet, softer, performance of rubber.

That's just my personal preference. If you want a stiffer, more sporty feel, poly is definitely the way to go. And, the squeek is easily quieted with lithium grease spray, but needs to be done occasionally.
