how many miles does your XJ8 have.

I would highly recommend the Trani Service. I got an independent shop to do it for $130 using the correct fluid when I first bought it because I didn't know if the previous owner had ever done it.

Miles ...
Hi,
my XJ8 (X308) from 2001 has now some 181.000 Km (approx. 112,500 miles) on the clock. Runs perfectly, very low fuel consumption.
5HP24 gearbox had 3 oil changes in last months to clear the system out.
Needs front and rear suspension bushes replaced now.
I love my Jag.
Takeo.

Tranny fluid
160,000 on my 2002 XJR.
In the 60k since I've owned it:
Thermostat
S/C idler pulley bearing
Fuel pumps
(And I just did the plugs but that's a normal wear and tear thing)
Prior to me I know some coil packs were replaced.
Thinking of changing the fluid in the "lifetime sealed" tranny soon though.

Hi,
X308 auto tranny (5HP24) fluid: ONLY use LT 71141 ATF from Mobil. I buy it at abt. EUR 9,- per liter from a French website called LUBONLINE. Do not forget to drop the oil pan and change the filter.
Trick for emptying the box AND the torque converter:
* Put car on stands or elevator.
* Put large used oil tray under car.
* Drain oil via drain plug.
* Drop oil pan and remove filter. Discard filter.
* Put oil pan back on, provisionally.
* Undo top and bottom oil hoses from oil cooler.
* Tie both hoses, pointing downward as not to get engine front dirty.
* Start car and, on idle, with brake pedal well-depressed, cycle tru all gears, give every gear 3 seconds. Stop engine for 3 minutes. Do this 3 times. The torque converter will drain tru the hose of the oil cooler, (it will pump itself empty) mainly tru the bottom cooler hose, the cooler itself will also drain empty.
* Drop oil pan again, clean oil pan thoroughly, clean magnets inside oil pan.
* Let box leak out for 2 hours or so.
* Install new oil filter.
* Put oil pan back on, using a new seal.
* Do not forget to put drain plug back on but only tighten by hand
* Re-connect bottom hose to oil cooler.
* Using a VERY CLEAN or new hand-held piston oil pump with plastic hose, fill abt. 8 liters in gearbox, tru the top cooler hose.
* Re-install top cooler hose.
* Start engine, and with brakes held firm, cycle 3 times tru all gears.
* Go have a cup of tea.
* Check oil level via drain plug of oil pan. it should just drip out. If not, top up via drain plug hole, and tighten.
* Re-do the gear cycling process till proper level is attained, then tighten drain plug.
* Clean mess up you made under car.
* Have shower, cup of tea and go for test drive.
* Re-check level after about a 100 miles or so.
Note: gearbox oil capacity is 10 liters.
Good luck.
Takeo.
PS: I do not assume any responsibility for whatever I write.

1998 XJR with 140,000 miles....ABS issue ongoing, rear axle just refurbished. Front axle yet to be rebushed, welding required at L/H V mount and some minor paint to do before I am happy....might even get the wheels refurbished, although I wish I had Asteroid alloys on it!
Lovin it! Goes like stink!
