Default How much fluid is enough and what kind?

Trying to get things ready to change my tranny fluid. I've read several posts but want to make sure. I have seen its a 6mm hex for the fill plug. I'm guessing I need a hand pump?? How do I know when the level is right? Is it like checking a rear differential?

I guess you have an XJ8 since you posted in this section, but knowing your year and model for sure will help get you the correct answers. The NA and SC cars have different trannys.

Try putting your model and year in your signature or edit your original post and add that info.

This sheet, taken from the Jaguar XJ8 Technical Specifications document, might help.

Without draining your torque converter, which you cannot do, it will take a little over 5 qts. With the car level on jack stands or a lift. Fill until ATF drains out the fill hole at about 120 degrees F. That temp is about where it becomes uncomfortable to hold your hand on the bottom of the transmission pan. Move the shift lever slowly through the positions several times with the engine running.

I hope that you haven't fallen for the 'only use Pentosin' mantra. Ford now has formally stated that MERC V meets the LT71141 specification as has several other brands.

Basically any fluid that complies with the LT 71141 specs (see fluids sheet again). If you find such declaration on the fluid's bin it's one you can use. Given that you have faith in the quality standards of the manufacturer.

MERCON V should be available almost anywhere ATF is sold. Certainly any auto parts stores.

The XJR has a Mercedes transmission, the XJ8 has a ZF. Totally different fluids.
