humming sound
My 98 VDP developed a humming sound and low grade harmonic vibration while driving. The best description that I can give is like I have all-terrain 4 wheel drive tires on. It is especially noticable when I am crusing at 30 to 40 mph. The noise ceases at a dead stop.
I checked the tires to see if there is a bubble or defect, but did not see any. The car otherwise seems to drive fine.
Any suggestions on the cause and solution.
Thanks

alckc, sounds like you did the first thing in checking the tires for any tread separation/cupping. Next, while driving the car, when you make highway speed turns (say for an off-ramp or a curve in a highway), does the noise go away/change? You will need to do this for both directions. If the noise changes/goes away, then that is leaning towards a bearing problem. Finally, rotate the tires front to back and back to front. Does the noise change? If so, then that is confirming a tire problem. As you are rolling the tires around, do a good look at both the outside and inside portions of the tires.
Let us know what you find and we will go from there.

update
I finally resolved the humming sound on my 98 VDP. My own assessment were the wheel bearings. However, I have been busy with work and travelling so haven't had time to tackle the problem. The noise have been getting louder and vibration worse.
I took my car into the dealer last month who did not know what was wrong stating that I had to get an alignment first before they can accurately access the problem. I got the alignment done and took it to an independent this week. I told the mechanic that I think it was the bearings. Few hours later the mechanic called and confirmed that both front wheel bearings were shot. (I had the right front replaced last year).
Total cost $707. About 180 for parts and rest labor.
Rides a whole lot better now. Another problem done. Still more work to be put into the car...........

That mechanic must like to dine on caviar. Which illustrates the value of websites like this, making the cost of running a Jaguar a little cheaper for those who can 'do it themselves'. Wheel bearings for Jags. are not gold-plated, I don't think they're any different than any other car -- apart from one thing of course, THE PRICE! And I'll bet someone on this site knows an alternative wheel bearing that works ok for a lot less money.
