Ignition Key Question

Ignition Key Question
I've misplaced my key and the backup key does not start the car ('01 XJR). It unlocks the doors, turns in the ignition switch and activates all of the electrical functions but no starter (not even a click). The car had only one key when I purchased it - the backup was purchased from the dealer years ago after showing the title/VIN, but I've never used it before this. Wondering if the no-start problem could be the key (I understand they have a chip that requires programming) or do I have another problem since the key works for everything but the starter? Thanks for any thoughts.

If the key was never configured to the car, it will NEVER start the engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now you need another key (always have at least two!) and configure BOTH.
I always have 3 keys to every Jaguar I buy. (two Master keys and one Valet key)
This is the way Jaguar issued the cars from NEW.
If I buy a car with one, I order 2 more and configure them to the car.

somebody with IDS (dealer scan tool) may be local and can come to you to make them start the car. takes about 5 minutes to program the key to your car

Too bad you are almost 2000 miles away.
I have two IDS and three WDS complete systems but there are other 'scan-tools' that might be able to configure the keys to your car?
Not only do I like the have several keys, I like to have several diagnostic devices as back-up!!!!!
(can never have too many tools!!!!)

Wow .. same issue and dilemma that I just posted about last week with my XJ8, Harlem. I still don't understand why the dealership (who happens to be a personal friend of mine, as well) sold and cut me the key and yet (1) never mentioned it needed to be programmed or (2) according to Motor, TWO keys are needed to do so. Or, most importantly, (3) none of the four Jag dealerships here in the DFW area have the equipment/software to program keys for Jags before 2013 MY.
btw, does anyone have the actual TSB on how to program a key for a MY 2000 XJ8? The process is apparently not described in the Jag factory workshop literature.

All North America Jaguar sedans from (V) F00001 to F59525 require the 'ROLLING-CODE' RFID key.(MEGAMOS 48)
There are different part numbers for a 'cut-key' or a 'blank-key' to be cut locally by the dealer.
A 'cut-key' needs to be ordered by the dealer (already cut by Jaguar according to the VIN) but a 'blank-key' can be cut locally by a dealer with the TIBBE key cut machine.
A dealer can cut the key by 'matching' your key or the original key code can be determined through the Jaguar Dealer Network by VIN lookup.
