I'm looking at buying an XJ8

Couple of the things I would look for. Would be past ownership. How many people owned it and where did it live. When test driving listen for and noises. XJ8's will use a lot of bushings and rubberized suspension components, this makes the car (when running well) very quiet. Many times the suspension fixes themselves are not terribly expensive however, they can be difficult to pin down. Any noise should be looked into.
I would say and I'll probably get a lot of users who may disagree with me, but, I feel that 2001-2003 are the best years for the big cat. If you can speak with the owner check on the status of timing tensioners. Find out if they have ever been changed.
Some good car buying tips are, to look at the current state of the oil, look at the state of the tires. Odd wear patterns are usually a good sign of ball joint failure or that the car needs to be aligned.
Lastly: Take the time to test everything. All the buttons the seats to windows. Everything. Most of the electronics are (despite popular belief) are very good. But, you'll want to know what you might need to replace.
The XJ8 is a very well built car, its very tight, and the technology used is ahead of its time. So many times someone used to something different will describe them as difficult. I don't believe this to be true. They are built with parts and they're just a big washing machine. Despite what some may believe they do not run on black magic and voodoo. They're simply a well built car that wants to give you the best experience possible. Which requires your attention.
Happy hunting,
-Mitch
Also there are a lot of us on here with access to service manuals. You can always start a new thread and ask a question before buying the car. Some of us will probably jump in fairly quickly with a quick opinion.

This has probably been one of my favorite cars I owned. If you're sitting in traffic or covering long distances you really appreciate the comfort of this car and when you get into gentle high speed highway curves the car really comes into itself.
BUT owning an audio video business we're looking at carting around speakers, projectors, tv's etc around LA and if we are being honest the Jag boot isnt the best at that.
