Default intercooler covers need paint

Hi, has anyone on the forum repainted the Supercharged covers on their XJR ? One of mine is peeling around the letters. I guess what I'm looking for is a paint code / color. Thanks much,

Jim

They are a dark greyish color and match other engine components - looks to be aluminum beneath the paint.

I painted mine satin black, and sanded down the lettering with dry 800 grade wet n dry.

Did you use high temp paint ? Looks good, but I'm wanting to go original color.

I'm not sure that the color is documented that anyone could say for sure. It's looks to be similar to Dorchester grey like many of the trim parts.

Duplicolor HWP102 is close to Dorchester:
Duplicolor Wheel Coating, Graphite, 11 oz. Aerosol HWP102: Choose the best Paint - Specialty Paint at Advance Auto Parts

Prep is key. Try to scuff away any loose bits and degrease the surface with alcohol or lacquer thinner.

Earlier this year I did ask on the forum about what the best colour was for the intercoolers in respect of heat dissipation. Had various answers, all of which were valid, but I decided to paint them black on the basis that most radiators/ heat exchangers are black as its the best colour for heat transfer. Later on a U Tube channel (mighty car mods ) they did a test on a alloy intercooler on the inlet/ outlet temps. They then painted the same intercooler black and were totally amazed at the difference between the inlet/ outlet temps, which were a lot lower in certain conditions.

Interesting, I wouldn't have imagined it to make much of a difference. Personally, I just went for polished.

Looks great. This leads to the next question - do these come apart easily to work on?

I did consider polishing them, but thought if I do the intercoolers, I will have to polish the supercharger ( they just look good ) then thought, how the hell will I keep it shiny? So Hence the satin black with sanded lettering, which by luck matches the silver JAGUAR on the coil pack cover quite well.

Thanks

Easy is relative.

To get the charge coolers off you have take the intake elbow off, remove the V8 piece, and the supercharger. Then you can get to the bolts that hold them to the heads.

It really isn't so bad except for having to drain the cooling system to take the thermostat housing off, which just makes a mess.

If you do polish the intercooler, I would suggest getting them media blasted with soda or walnut shells to get the paint off. Nothing too course because it's aluminum. I didn't do that and it was a real bitch to bet the paint out of the welds.
