intermittion stopping
When driving through a parking lot say just a couple of MPH the car just stops, like I put the brakes on. Then I can’t get it to go. I try shifting to reverse no luck then, back to drive nope. I try shutting it off and then back on and put in gear then it will go. When I step on the gas it will finally jerk forward a couple of times and drive perfect. This has happened on 2 separate occasions now. My husband was with me the last time this happened and he thought I slammed on the brakes. There are no lights lighting up, no messages. Can someone give me any ideas. 1999 xj8 155k with a 60k motor. Thank you for your help.

jfmelius, go to a local auto parts store and see what codes you can get pulled from the computer and post them here. From the sounds of things, you have either a tranny issue or possibly a situation with the speed sensors of the car leading to the ABS system acting funny. But, the codes will help get us going in the right direction.

I got a scanner a couple of days ago code P0732 came up. My husband came home from work and cleared the codes. Drove the car a little in the driveway ( I haven't drove it since I got it home) he said it runs like crap now that he cleared the codes. i tried getting codes from it yesterday and nothing. Engine light is on and transmission falt light. For me it would run okay on flat roads but we live up hill and I had to drive up a curvy road backwards to get it home. When driving of flat road I never tried to push it just drove slow. I guess I should try driving it to see what "crap" is

jfmelius, based on the code, I bet the car is running like hell and won't accelerate. The car is not seeing the proper response from the tranny for 2nd gear. So, it is more than likely trying to stay in 3rd to not have to go through 2nd. So, yes, I can see where the car would not want to climb up a hill. I would recommend taking the car to a tranny shop and letting them see what is wrong. It can be something as silly as the tranny fluid being low. But, more than likely it is a problem with a shift solenoid. Fixing it isn't a big deal (solenoid can be accessed from the under side of the car and pulling of the tranny should not be required), but it will probably end up running you about $400 or so to get repair (this is a guestimate). If it is simply the fluid level low, then you will be out the door for under $100 more than likely. A quality tranny shop will be able to diagnose it in about 10 minutes or so. If they are saying that the tranny needs a complete rebuild, take it somewhere else and get a second opinion.
Hope this helps.

tranny
Well, I had it towed to the mechanic that replaced the engine when a timing chain broke a couple of years ago. So, he said it was the transmission and needed a rebuild. I found a tranny with 15k and had him put that in. I am still having problems. From (P) to (R) not all the time. But also driving notice more at slow city speed shifting into 2nd. Also, when stepping on the gas letting off and then on again. Mechanic said that is normal. I am still questioning that part.( this an automatic by the way) I had another mechanic actually show me under the car. Says everything is okay. Could this be something in the differential? I am not paraniod just want to make sure I am safe.
