I've never had a Jag but I want an XJR
Hey guys,
I'm currently in Dallas TX and have been driving a 1997 Mercedes Benz E420 for about 4 years. The ca has been good to me and it has a nippy 275hp 32v V8 and a 5 speed auto. The word on the street is that Jags use the same transmission.
I'm now looking for more power and a little change. I can't help but consider an XJR because they look like so much value.
So I want to spend around $15,000 on one. I know a guy who has access to dealer auctions and am wondering what I could get for that kind of money. I'm not scared of mileage when it comes to MB cars but I know nothing about Jags.
What should I look for? Ideally I would like one thats newer then 2001 and has less then 75000 miles.
I'm not affraid of getting my hands dirty and love big powerful sedans. I also own the following classics.
Mercedes Benz 450SEL 6.9
Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3
Rover P6 3500S
I would be grateful for any advise.
All the best
Al

Texas Cars Direct is a great dallas area place for jaguars, alot of people recooment this place, I have heard on several forums.
This is the cheapest XJR they have, but look at the inventory, they have a lot of nice cars.

You should go check them out tho, they have some XJ8s that are fairly new for less then 15,000

Thanks for responding, I've seen they're Ebay listings and they seem to have great deals. I've also seen good feedback from them from other forum members so I will certainly look at them.
My bigger concern is what to look for on these cars. I've pretty much learnt Mercedes cars backwards and know how to spot a lemon. What are the parts prices like for Jags? Are there any aftermarket sellers? I understand that once I get up to 2002. I can get past the Nikasil and the Tensioner issues.
Any other issues (Rust, suspension, electrics) that I need to know about?

I think anything 200 or newer won't have the nikisil problem, at least that's how it is in XK8's, IDK about Xj8s, but it's the same engine so I would assume.
That;s all I can help you with there, cuz it is the same engine as my dad's car, and we haven't had anyproblem with Jag's V8 engine, it's a good injun.

I, too, have had a 300 SEL 6.3 (1970). That car was a monster! The XJR is much more refined. You dont feel the torque through the transmission as you do with a 6.3. It's more like the 6.9. Mercedes toned down the torque converter in the 6.9 tranny. That's why the 6.3 is actually faster to 60 than the 6.9. Annyhoo, having owned a 6.3 and driven my buddy's euro 6.9, I still LOVEmy XJR. However, $15K or under you may be limited to 1999 or older. If you can get a 2000 or newer, you should go for it - no Nicasil issue. If you get a car with 70K miles or more, change the timing chain tensioners (if they havent already been done.)
