Default Jags are Scary

My XJ scared the bejeezus out of me last night. Leaving the office, I got 10 yards and it quit on me. A number of warning messages scrolled by including "Engine Failed" (the scary part!) all resulting in a CEL and failure to start. Having never seen an "Engine Failed" message before, I was prepared for the worst (timing chains or something equally horrific).

So, got towed home (via AAA, so free) and figured I'd check the codes with my OBDII scanner and Torque app today. Meanwhile, I'm thinking of possible engine replacement options, or maybe just parting the old girl out.

Checked the codes today and got these:

P0172: System too Rich (Bank 1)
P0175: System too Rich (Bank 2)

A quick search on the trusty Jag forum led me to look at the MAF sensor. Sure enough, I'd changed the air filter and fixed the filter box mount a while back and didn't plug the MAF sensor plug in fully, so it had worked its way loose. Pushed it all the way in and all is now well.

Note to Jaguar Cars: "Engine Failed" is a really overly descriptive message and can cause heart attacks!.

" Engine Failed " was an accurate description, after all you only got a few yards.

The driver information display isn't very big so has to be short and sweet.

" Excuse me old chap, but would you mind awfully, plugging the MAF sensor plug back in, it seems to have dropped off. "
You may get that on the new ones with the big TFT full colour display in the dash. LOL.

In hindsight, maybe, but when you see that message for the first time it's pretty scary.

Maybe your conscience is bothering you. You have replaced/checked your secondary timing chain tensioners, right?

Actually I haven't got to checking them yet. She only has 48,000 miles and based on info here, that's not in the usual failure mileage range. It is on my urgent list now though, as I think my conscience was indeed pricked.

You are delusional! It is not the usual failure range only because few examples of these cars have as few miles as yours! There is pretty good indication, although I have no proof, that it is time not mileage. To wit, mine were fine after 165,000 miles, but many have been reported failed in fewer than 90,000.

Do the secondaries only with the zip tie method and it is a fairly simple procedure and cheap for parts. Or risk a valve crash....

With you on that. I think we all start with the most expensive/ worse case scenario and work our way back to the cheapest, that way we are quite happy that it has only cost a few hundred and not a few thousand.

We are totally ecstatic when a fuse or a simple reboot cures the problem, and of course there is all the knowledge on this forum for when it does not.

Presumably, "engine failed" is what it displays when it can't even do "restricted performance". The info to the ECU doesn't make enough sense to run the engine at all. The ECU has waved a little white flag and given up.

Have a 01 xj8 in the stall right now with snapped secondary chain and bent valves on drivers side from failed tensioner. Mileage. 42,327. Time and mileage are key factors with plastics. In a landfill they last forever, not a car, or knee

Mine were replaced under warranty at 40k miles and that was when the car was only 6 years old.

Something you'd expect to see after a very large explosion coming from under the bonnet.

+1 on above. Do those tensioners please before it displays for real, like you I kept putting it off and was mortified at their condition.
