Default Jaguar xj8 rear left abs sensor

Hi All
My 2003 3.5 xj8 has recently been having problems dsc problems gearbox fault etc, I guessed this was an abs sensor as I had seen this before on a previous jag I owned.
I ran a code reader on it and it came up as rear left speed sensor
took in the garage this morning as I previously booked it in and they had got the sensor.
The guy phoned me half hour later and explained that the shaft the sensor fits to is corroded and will possibly need either a new shaft or shaft end.
I really dont follow that, mechanically im not really clued up but i cant make sense of what he is saying. Is he trying to rip me off, surely the shaft end could be cleaned, just seems a bit excessive to go to the trouble and expense of changing a shaft for the sake of an ABS sensor

Cheers guys any help greatly appreciated

My guess is that the diagnosis is a rusted or corroded 'reluctor' or 'tone-wheel' or 'tone-ring' that is faulty?

The rotating 'segments' provide a signal to the sensor for 'speed'.

Your mechanic is saying the shaft that the tone ring is mounted to is corroded and it should be replaced. He has a business to run and if he spends all his time cleaning and refreshing old parts, he runs the risk of 1) the solution takes more time to implement than just replacing the worn out part and thus, makes him less money because he can only charge you for some labor and not the part and 2) that the solution will not work well for very long because the old part is still worn and the new part will actually fix the problem.

Its your car so its up to you if you want to have the part replaced or not, but odds are not in your favor if you try to second guess the diagnosis of the expert you've hired to correct a problem that you don't have the knowledge or skill to address yourself.

Well said, mayhem; however, I would have to say that this applies to everything except the throttle body. It took me way too long to quit spending a lot of money on a new one when only the TPS or PPS was the problem, and on my ride, it was always the PPS.
