so today i was going to change the differential oil on my 2001 Jaguar XJR at my friends shop. the car is running perfect no noise or sounds from the rear at all speeds. it was more for preventative maintenance. once we were underneath the car we were stumped and had more questions than answers. so that is why i am here...
1) i bought Royal Purple 75w90 full synth because i could not find Shell Spriax Super TS90. i read a few forums with people using 75w90 grade oil. Is this the correct oil to use?
2) is this the fill plug?
3) breather...how can i remove this and clean it? simple screw off by hand ..or a special tool?
4)sway bar problems... tried tools that we had in hand but nothing we had could reach the plug. do we have to remove the sway bar ...seems like there are two pieces ....
removed the smaller piece...
so what we ended up doing just for the time being is cleaning up the fill plug to see if there are any leaks, i will be keeping an eye on it but i think the older gunk was from a previous drain and fill. (only had the car for about 8 months; got majority of the fluids changed except supercharger oil and coolant and this[Rear Diff].
XJR Pilot: yeah i was unable to find a socket or such to fit the fillplug to unscrew it. decided to get more information and going back at it within a few weeks.
Shotimer: is it me or does his fill plug seem located slightly higher than mine? maybe because i was looking at it from an upward angle i was unable to aline a socket correctly...but watching the video i did get an idea. i should have tried this angle, where the the two support beams meet because the one of the beams angles slightly lower to reach the mount.
ill edit a quick picture to explain my idea better.

Hello,
Changing diff oil is a simple job ;o)
Clean the plug area and I use either a 1/2" ratchet with no socket or have a special cut down long 1/2" section bar that was heated and bent at 90 deg.
and cut so that it was just long enough to enter the filler plug.
the long section is about 10" in your money ;o)
We use a suction pump to remove the oil....and with a bit of jiggery pokery
it removes most of it.
Don't worry about the original spec oil as it is now obsolete.
Any good quality 75/90 G5 spec full synthetic is the way to go.
Plus I also use a diff additive.
The breather can be removed with either a box wrench or preferably a deep socket....be gentle.
And while you're under there, make sure you give all four grease nipples a good shot in the drive shafts both ends as yours look rather dry ;o))
There is a nipple in each uni joint, four in total
The diff empty holds around 900mil but you won't need to worry about that.
Just make sure the car is level and fill until it dribbles out, wait until it stops and plug it up....job done for another 60.000 miles ;o)
The usual place after high mileage for leaks in the diff is at the output bearing seals.
And this can quite often be exacerbated by the breather on top of diff get's blocked with gunk over the years as it's never looked at ;o)
The diff input bearing seal seems to hold up well.

I appreciate the detailed instructions. going to tackle this job as soon as i get a day off. working my life away at the moment. also you said to grease the nipples...any particular grease? and how to go about it. sorry just like confirm and good looking out by spotting that!

The grease nipples or 'zerks' in your speak are the most neglected service item on these cars and they should not be!
Easy to do with car on a hoist while you do diff oil or at home with back end jacked up.
Gearbox in neutral, hand brake off will allow you to rotate the wheel while observing as the nipple comes around into a serviceable position.
Give it a good clean before attaching preferably a flexible wand on your favourite grease gun and give it a few shots until you hear a 'creaking' noise which is actually the excess grease oozing from UJ joint.
Stop and wipe off excess, repeat for three others.
Any good quality grease will suffice....I use wheel bearing grease.
This should be repeated every 30,000 miles to keep UJ's in good condition and stop clunking noises which are often mistaken for diff noises ;o))
It's the little things that make a difference in the scheme of things ;o))
