just a few questions from someone new to the jaguar scene...
hey everyone,
recently, we added a 2001 XJR to my family. as this is only the second british car in the family at all (my mini being the first), and the first jaguar ever for any of us, i'm kinda new to everything.
i can't seem to find an owner's manual anywhere in the car (checked the glove box, nope. checked the trunk, and there were papers, but not an owners manual). can anyone point me towards, maybe, a downloadable version of it? i'd really appreciate if someone was able to do that, thanks.
also, what do the two buttons on the shifter do? (one of them is labeled S, and the other has a picture of a gauge on it.)

I thought the 'S' button was to take the transmission out of 'comfort' mode? For example, letting the car actually utilize first gear? Some Mercedes tech told me that...

I believe S, sport mode, does give you first gear atleast it feels like it but i know for sure that it rides the gears out longer (instead of shifting at 3 or 4 k it will go to redline when WOT, make sure to press all the way down there is a physical button mechanism that will allow kickdown to engage). Take traction off for even more performance especially in the R, it tends to slip at every speed if traction control is off on-ramps, off-ramps, passing, uturns... Traction on can make the car stumble at times i think it retards the timing not sure tho.

Sport setting does indeed shift points. It does not change the stall speed. The MBZ tranny in the XJR does not have electronically controlled torque convertor where you can adjust stall speeds. The "comfort" setting does launch the car in 2nd gear under partial throttle starts. The sport setting will always launch the car in 1st gear. IMO the sport setiing should be normal and the other be called economy.

Thanks Waz, on the case again.
There was a discussion on another forum once started by a guy who felt he wasn't getting good-off-the line power. People started asking him if he was starting out in second. You can't do that unless your TCM or your transmission is broken, the car always starts off in first.

Buy a 1994 Jaguar XJ6, fitted from the factory with a ZF 4HP24 transmission and a selector switch that cancels first gear via the TCM, and you can start out in second gear all day long. Otherwise, you're starting out in first. Unless of course your transmission is baked, P1722 is flagged because normal stall speed is exceeded, and then you get to take off in fourth.
When did counting to five get so difficult...then pressing a button, and counting to five again?

sorry, JagtechOhio, but i found the owner's literature. i didn't realize that the glovebox has a separate section for it.
and as for the argument about first gear, i find a huge difference in acceleration between S mode and non-S mode, right away before i even get to shift points, so it could be that it turns first gear on and off.
love the car now, i just wish unlocking the doors was less of a confusing thing to do...

What's difficult about unlocking the doors ? All the doors on my car lock automatically when I put it in "Drive". When I stop and open my door, all the doors unlock automatically. If someone wants to get out and I'm not getting out, I hit the door lock button in the center console next to the valet button. Of course, from outside the car, I hit the remote fob unlock button once for me, or hit it twice to unlock all the doors.

Alex:
There are reported failures of the ZF transmission. By some folks reports, I believe there are some early failures on some ZF gearboxes. My MY'02 NA XJ8 has 160k on it's original. My MY'98 XJR has 215 on its original. My MY '99 XJR reportedly had a new box at 55 k miles, but still pulls fine at 165,000 miles. So, not every case has low mileage failures. Andyes, I run the Pi$$ out of all of mine.
