Default Just got tinted

When I bought my car, the previous owner had done a terrible job of tinting the car. He was willing to remove it all which I had him do until I could get it done right. So yesterday took the car to the shop I seem to be at every 2-3 months with some new project, a shop I really like and trust. I went with 15% on the sides and 20% on the back. Hope you like it, wanted to share with the collective

Not at all. It ran me $210, plus an additional only $10 because the previous owner didnt properly remove all the glue and rear quarter window tint. For those last 2 items, they only charged me $10 as Im a long time customer. For a lot of reasons, the X308 is a much more time consuming, tedious car to tint properly than most. It took them over 2 hours to do the whole job, so I think the price was more than fair

Very reasonable price. I am thinking of doing it this Summer IF I can find a good shop near here or up in MA where I spend time in the Summer.

They usually charge $160-180 for a 4 door, but I was there through the whole process for over 2 hours. Its a painstaking, arduous procedure for our cars. Im very happy without the outcome. I wish you were closer so I could get you in with them, but MA is pretty far.

That looks good ;o)

Best thing I ever did was to have my X308 tinted 6 years ago by our local
firm and I insisted on using Bole tint which varies in darkness according
to available light.
This set me back $500AUD all up and they did an excellent job.

Hate to resurrect a thread, but I’ve been looking into getting my XJR tinted as it’s my black/black DD in Phoenix.

Brought it to a tint shop that told me the rear windshield is difficult because of the third brake light. I either need to remove it, then glue it back on after they tint, or risk them breaking it when they attempt to tint around it. In fact, he said he’s tinted a few X308s and has never even seen one with the third brake light still attached.

So my question is this... do you still have your third brake light attached? If so, how did the tint installer deal with it? Did he cut the tint around it? Thanks!

my shop did not even mention it and I have never had my shop complain about the third brake light. I don't know what's wrong with that shop but if I was you I would not take my car there. It is actually a total non-issue

Make sure they tint around it. Legally that light has to be visible and being in AZ I'll bet your going dark with it. The tint places I visit tend to have auto-cad machines that cut everything out to size including 3rd brake lights.

Ok thanks everyone for your input! Glad I asked here, because I thought it sounded so odd when he explained it to me.

Will be taking it somewhere else!

Mine was tinted when I got it (actually planning on removing it, hate tint), but they definitely removed the third brake light to get the eniter rear window. No big deal to remove, I recently had it out to replace a bulb. I do see how they could be worried about breaking it thought, the old plastic gets quite brittle.

Hey Muti007, did you recently have your 98 XJR for sale? Im in Bensalem, PA and noticed the ad on Craigslist when I bought my 03 XJR a couple months ago. If I remember correctly it had 78k on it? Did you end up keeping it? Just curious.

I thought it was the same car. I saw it sitting at ALs shop a few months back and then noticed the ad. That triumph is sweet, good luck with it.

Yup that was my car at Al's. I've been going to them for about 30 years or so even from way back when they were on street road . Great shop great people. Thank you for the well wishes also with the new bike

Does it seem like they removed the entire assembly, then re-glued the two pegs (bosses) back on the window after they tinted? I’ve replaced the bulbs before, but no need to remove the entire assembly to do that - just the back panel.

Mainly wondering if the tint shop does trim around the light, rather than tinting underneath it, if some light will still shine through to the interior right around the brake light.

It does look like they removed the entire assembly as the tint completely overs the window behind the light. I would assume they re-glued the tabs that hold the light on, but can't say how they did it for sure. I do know it was done at the Jag dealer in Texas when the car was new. I would think they could get a nice cut to surround the brake light and you would be fine. They would just need to pull back the housing a tiny bit to get some tint in there to block all light.

Thanks very much for your response - really helpful.

OP - your tint looks great and uniform on the rear windshield. Are you able to confirm if your tint shop removed your third brake light?

Muti007 are those Coventry Whitleys on your XJ? Looks nice in black, always struggled to find photos of those installed on x308's. Think that's the first example I've seen with the black rims on a black/dark x308.
