Default just when you think it's starting to go well... O2 sensor fun...

Hello JF members!

Happy Sunday to one and all.

I'm a noob here - posted a thread a couple of questions a week or so back re: a P1647 and had some great tips thanks.

I worked away from home most of the week so "playing" with my toys is restricted to weekends.

So back to the O2 change...

I read the tips on "how easy the RH bank sensor is, but what a PITA the LH one" and gritted my teeth and got on with it yesterday.

My practice run was on a '98 3.2 XJ8 which I bought for spares... took the LH pre-cat O2 like picking an apple So, at least I have a replacement (as long as it works

Then as a, OK how hard can it be, tried the RH side on the "spares" jag...

And here I'd like to post a note to all wannabe O2 repair chaps...

YOU HAVE TO BE A GYNAECOLOGIST to get the b*&^dy thing out...

Then I started on the pimp jag - my almost daily drive '99 XJ8 3.2.

Hoses! Pipes? How many are there?!?!

Syphoned off some coolant, tastes nasty doesn't?! took off the header tank hoses.

Header tank off OK, I started to look at another control thing stuck to the inside wheel arch that was in the way of the heat shield over the cat.. I dunno, looks like a heater control or similar. Fiddling around I managed to snap one of the connecting spouts... b**ger.

Back to the spares jag - took that one off...

Sprayed up the heat shield studs and got that off.

Then at last got a look at the O2 sensor... why do clean things not work and dirty things keep on working... I always wonder about that...

Sprayed up the sensor with more WD40, and as I haven't got a fancy O2 spanner, I cut the ring end off a 22mm combo spanner and stuck a jack handle on it for leverage.

A few more sprays and a cup of monkey tea, then more gynaecology antics to get the connecting wire/block off.

Fair bit of swearing I must say, but we live in banjo land so not many around to offend..

Tried the sensor, bit of a tight job that, good pull on the bar and it was off!

Brilliant!

All going well now...

Until I checked the connector on the spare sensor...

TELL ME MR JAGUAR - WHY, OH WHY DO YOU THINK IT'S AMUSING TO CHANGE THE BL@@DY SEX OF A CONNECTOR?!?!?!?!???!!?

My daily drive '99 has female 4 slot, and the spares jag has a mail 4 pin....

Do I need to waste more time?!??!

So it's Sunday morning and I'm patching the female connector via chocolate block and covering it in silicon to seal everything....

I'll mail you more later once I've put everything back and tried the OBD to see if a days effort has been worth it...

Later - grumpy *** in banjo country south Sweden...

Brilliant

OK so it starts up ok and the dashboard doesn't look like a cheap christmas tree...

I'll let it run and then plug the obd in and see what news I get...

OK forgot to post back - ran the OBD and got 0,900 and 0,885 on the O2B1S1 and O2B2S1 on tick over, then much lower than that at 2500 rpm. I hope that means the swapped sensor is ok

Putting all the bl@@dy pipes back around the header tank and the thing under it was another gynaecological nightmare... but if you persevere all will be well!
