Has anyone tried one? Thoughts?
Seems to me that it would be better than both the open cone and replacing the stock filter with a K & N, if routed it to the cold air vent hole used by the air box.

I don't think that is quite the case. They have K&N drop in Oiled filters that work just fine. I've had a Spectre filter on mine for about 10k miles and no problems. I can see if you drenched the filter after cleaning with oil, that might be a problem. I'm just curious as to why they have Max HP numbers. I would think it would flow just fine for any application. The Mina Gallery setup is Ok. I saw paramount performance had a carbon fiber enclosed cone that looked pretty nifty. I also use a water meth kit from snow performance that does very well in these cars and it's not crazy expensive. The snow kit is also pretty easy to install.

I think I might try to make one on my own. I have a large K&N cone. I am thinking of putting it in the fender and running pipe thru the factory air hole.

This technology dates back to the carburetor days and perhaps was of benefit then.
Even if they they do not foul the MAF and are less restrictive, the fuel injection system will vary the fuel delivered (and power generated) based on air flow.
The increased power via increased air flow will only be available at wide open throttle (WOT). At other throttle openings, the air flow and power generated will be similar to original filter condition. How often do you drive at WOT?

The guys that play around with power say you can tweak a little from this technology -- but it is out at the limits ....... and it is all about allowing more air to flow and still protect the engine.
Many of higher flow filters when you look deeper are not filtering as well - and the change in sound is just a change in sound it does not equate to more power.
