Default Key programming

I have a new blank key (not an FOB remote, but a key) that I need cut and programmed for my 2002 XJR.

I'm in the LA area and I have called three locksmiths places and they all tell me that they can't do the key for my car. That doesn't sound very good to me. Has any member here been lucky with a locksmith or one just must go to the dealer to get this done? Worst case scenario, how much does the dealer charge for this job?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Thanks for the info. I actually finally did find an independent tht does it for close to that: $45 for the cut and $45 for th programming, not bad. So, I'll find out tomorrow how serious he is.

Remember to bring all of your keys: they will all need to be reprogrammed.

Wow, which means that I better first buy the green key (which I don't have either) so they can all be programmed the same at once. Now, that was an excellent money-time-effort saving tip, Sr. And it is much appreciated.

Good luck on finding a valet key that will program. Both blacks programmed; but three separate greens, no go.

Hmm, I wonder why? A few questions...
Did the green key program just like the black ones (i.e. with no restrictions, which would beat the purpose)?

Or, it did not take programming at all?

Did all these keys come from the same source?

Did you also try the dealer, but with the same luck?

If the green key will be such a pain, I'll just have my second black key done and get it over with. I have lived without the green key forever and it won't be such a big deal after all.

Hmm, too bad.

Cheers,

The green key was bought from the dealer: first two were bad fit (wrong cut); third fit. One black key lost its memory, the othe was still good. Local indy wanted half as much to reprogram bad key; blacks reprogrammed (two years later, still good), green wouldn't program; not interested in burning $245 to see if the dealer could make it work, stuck it in the center box where it sits.
