Default Latest Tips on Parts for Our ZF Gearbox?

So I am getting all the tell-tale signs of transmissions trouble. A failure to find first gear at low-speed acceleration. Gearbox fault messaging. A new sound when shifting to reverse.

I am resigned to the problem.

But what is are the best sources for parts? Most good local tranny shops wont work on them because they dont know parts sources. I know of Ericsson in CT. I have read about kits to repair A bands from a machine shop in the Midwest. But that was years ago.

Best ideas welcome.

Thanks,

LA

Hi Len,

Have you scanned for diagnostic trouble codes? If you have the gearbox fault message, you should have stored DTCs that may help narrow down the diagnosis. You can download the transmission DTC Summaries at this link:

Jaguar X308 ZF 5HP24 Transmission DTC Summaries From 1999

Have you inspected the transmission for fluid leaks, oil contamination of the electrical connector, and problems at the rotary switch?

Eriksson Industries does still offer parts for ZF gearboxes. I just got an output shaft for a Range Rover ZF 6HP28 from them. The last time I checked, there were quite a few sources for the A-drum repair kit. You can download the parts catalog at this link:

Cheers,

Don

Simple fix with no reaming or special tools required

Installing the ZF5HP-24 Pressure Regulator Repair kit is a simple fix with no reaming and does not require special tools or complete disassembly of the valve body. This Pressure Regulator Repair kit fixes the PR valve malfunction that causes rough or bangy shifts complaints. If you need to disassemble this type of valve body, exercise a great deal of care when removing the separator plate from the upper channel plate as this is where all the small parts are located. Make note of where the small parts go because they are different for each model.
Corrects/Prevents/Reduces:
  • Runaway pressure that breaks drums
  • Harsh shifts
  • Kick-down bang

Hi King Charles,

I thought about mentioning the TransGo kit, but after re-reading Len's description of his transmission's misbehavior, it doesn't sound like the common pressure valve problem that causes harsh shifts or slip-and-bang shifts that the TransGo kit is designed to resolve. What do you think, from Len's description?

Cheers,

Don

My train of thought is if you're going in there, you might as well upgrade a known flaw.

I'm still hoping he doesn't have to open up the transmission at all, but it may be wishful thinking. I would exhaust all electrical/electronic diagnosis first.

That said, it's only a matter of time unfortunately.
