Default A little Diagnostics Assistance Please...

My wife had the car yesterday, and the phone rings... she is concerned because the check engine light came on and she is afraid to drive any further. I assure her that the amber light is OK and I will look at it later. So,not having a code reader yet, I drive to Autozone and they read two codes, P1336 and P1791. Of course their system didn't have anything Jaguar specific so I have attempted to look it up in the JTIS.

I found the P1336 in the JTIS: CKPS / CMPS disconnected synchronization malfunction CKPS / CMPS gap incorrect / foreign matter on sensor face
I can't find a P1791 in the JTIS or on the forum with any meaningful information.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Ok... I have found the P1336 in the JTIS. Either Crankshaft or Camshaft Positions Sensors. As it isn't coding right now, my guess is that it is a dirty sensor. I think I am good with that one, I will simply have my mechanic take a look at it as I have to get a 60K service.

Any help with the P1791?

The DTC 17xx is going to be a gearbox related one.
I don't have a listing for P1791 in the factory guides but here they are for you to look at.

I have run into this before and sometimes the WDS or IDS had an explanation but the DTC summary did not.

When I worked at the dealer I could call Jaguar Tech Hotline and get some answers but I left in 2006 so I can't help you there.

Thanks, I had all of those except the second transmission specific one.

Of course, after asking more questions, I begin to hear more of the story... she said that she started back out of a parking spot and apparently the engine died. She restarted it and all was well except the check engine light was on.

Why do these sort things always happen when my wife drives the car, any car, and I can never get a good explanation of what really happened?!

Well, I think you are quite luckey that your wife even notices dash lights and is worried enough to stop driving and call! Transmission faults can follow engine crank sensor faults in that the tranny module detects an unexpected difference in reported engine and transmission shaft speed.

You are quite right... just a bit of frustration that she didn't tell me that before. Of course, the new question is why did the engine die? My guess is that it is related to the CMPS/CKPS code. Just another reason to get it in for the service.

Hi
P1791 TP (Electric) Circuit Malfunction
The TP is the Trottle Position Sensor.

I found this information using search term "Jaguar P1791 code" on the internet. It brought up several websites, all with the same information.
