locked out of my jag
i am not as daft as the title may suggest, i have the keys next to me, but cannot open the door. remote only works the headlights [been like that since i had the car] is it known for the door lock to just sieze up? or is it more likely that some little oik has tampered with the lock. the car is 1998 xjr uk spec. any ideas/suggestions would be greatly recieved, thanks in advance. andrew.

HI
Update - there is no keylock on the passenger door (other forum members are correct) not even on the US models.
Have you tried to gain access by using the key in the driver and the passenger door?
If you tried the driver door and it did not work, then trying passenger door might work.
Have tried to unlock the boot to gain access to the battery? Use your key in the boot key lock (turn key clockwise). When the boot lid opens then remove the boot floor panel and do a battery hard reset.
Here a photo showing the battery hard reset (provided by forum member SuperSport):
The only other sugguestions are calling a motor club service like AAA (USA) - not sure of the ones in UK, or a locksmith service.

the key goes all the way in and turns clockwise as normal but will not turn more than a few degrees anticlockwise. it is like it is the wrong key, as you probably know you can lock any tibbes lock with any tibbes key but only the correct key will unlock. and yes i am using the correct key. thank you for help andrew

Shove the 'straw' of a WD40 can into the lock and give it a good soaking.
Then do a bit of key waggling/wiggling/furkling while swearing under your breath.
It isn't the ideal lock lubricant but better than nothing on New Years Day.
I think UK cars have only a driver's side keyhole (mine does anyway).
Maybe also try dismantling + cleaning the key fob. If the lights work I think it must be paired to the car OK.

locked out of my jag
happy new year to you all and thank you for all your help. have got into my car by glueing some kitchen foil to the underside of the buttons on the remote, i can now lock and unlock using the remote. it is a very fiddly job made 10 times worse because i am suffering with a sore head and a mild case of the shakes, thank goodness it only new year once a year! will still have to sort out the lock but that can wait untill i am back at home. at my sisters at the moment and she has no tools. once again thank you all for the assistance, where else would you get willing help on new years day?

Well, Andrew I am glad you were able to get back into your Jaguar.
Here is another tip I found in the Drivers Handbook:
If you do not have the Jaguar Drivers Handbook or the Vehicle Care Handbook, I have previously posted them (2000 XJ models) here on forum.
Here is the drivers handbook PDF file:

Here is another tip I found in the Drivers Handbook:
Winter Driving
Freeing a Frozen Door Lock
Caution: Freeing a Frozen Door Lock
Do not apply a proprietary Lock De-icer through the keyhole.
Should the lock become frozen, heat the end of the key before use.It does not say how to heat it. Maybe trying to heat the tip of the key with some really hot water.

Yes, and the blasted locking on drive away doesn't help either. Drive out of the garage to pick up missus and she ends up heaving at the door handle while giving me dirty looks.
Andrew - not only did we get you into the car but also resurrected your remote - drinks are on you when your head recovers!!

No. US market is also driver's door only. You can't open the door for a lady without carrying a working fob.
Open driver's door, give the lady a smile, go around the Jaaag and open the passenger's door for the lady.
edit: This is a good tip even if the keyfob works!
The XJs for continental Europe (UK - don't know) have an additional keyhole in the trunk lid.

thanks jim, saved me looking for a door handle that do not exist. hang on though, all those wrongside drive cars must have handle with lock on the left door?

Yes, you are correct about wrong sided cars. I had an occasion to drive a rental car in the UK.
I did ok on the divided multi-lane highways and a little more poorly on the London city roads, but had the worse time turning into the shopping area (to keep left instead of keep right - very confusing for a US driver).
I found this Ebay listing on the UK website (looks like what you want new 4 button Fob outer case with pad):
JAGUAR XJ8 XK8 XJR XKR REMOTE KEYFOB CASING - NEW | eBay
I updated my post# 2 to include weblink links to the 2 Handbook PDF files downloads.
