Default Looking at a 1999 XJR tomorrow, couple questions ...

I'm checking out a 1999 XJR on Saturday and had a couple of questions. It has 72,000 miles.

1) How much would it cost for new tires as apparently the ones it has are just about done?

2) Anything I should be looking for with that specific year for problems?

I've checked the stickies and have a pretty good idea what I should be looking for but any added advice always welcome.

Thanks guys.

Jaguar only specified Pirelli PZero - strictly summer tire - they are around $350.00 installed ...... each.

All of the engine issues are possible in the 99's -- so I would check to see if the engine was replaced.

I also check for vin stickers on the major panels to see if anything was replaced.

At 72k you should look at the brakes -- could need all new rotors. Also getting near the point of front suspension bushing replacements. Headliner.

Coolant change - brake flush

See this thread for very useful info...
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ght=test-drive

Check if the tensioners (at least the secondary) have been replaced.
Check if the waterpump has been replaced (new one is metal, old one is plastic).
Check if the thermostat housing was updated to the metal one (old one is plastic, prone to crack!).

Good luck!!!

Although tires are likely to be the least of your worries there are alternatives to the mega-expensive P-Zeros.

Cheers

Thanks Doug, yeah, I just finished doing a tire search here and I can see that people are trying several different types. Fun reading BTW.

As an owner of one of these beauties, Yeltdog said it... all the problems with the early engines could be present, water pump, secondary tensioners, etc. It will probably need some front end work, belts, tranny fluid change, etc. In short, check out all of it's maintenance history. Check out the FAQ's at the top of the forum and the check lists for buying one of these, there is a lot of great information.

You should be able to pick it up sub $9000 so look sharp.

Well, I checked out the car yesterday and it just seemed kind of tired.

The paint was a bit faded, the engine seemed good but they had no records for repairs and there were some oil stains in the engine bay. Also, the suspension was done and needed to be replaced as did the tires. The interior had some busted pieces here and there such as the vents.

Probably would be a a fun fixer upper but not what I'm looking for. The hunt continues. Thanks again for the help.
