Default Looking for good Jag specialist for A drum replacement in San Diego North County Area

Hi all, it's been a while since i was on this forum last, glad to see it's still going! I'm looking for recommendations for a jag specialist in the San Diego North County area. My 2003 X308 has been off the road and in my garage for the last 4 years gathering dust since the transmission A drum blew. The car only has 88K miles and is in reasonably good condition, too good to scrap for sure. I'd like to get it repaired and to be able to drive it again but need to get the A drum replaced and I simply do not have the time or room to do it.

Is there someone in the Escondido CA area, say within 50 miles, that you might recommend who does good work and charges a fair price? I do know of one place in the Vista/San Marcos area that is supposed to be able to do it but I was warned away from them by other mechanics that I deal with for my other vehicles. I also spoke with the guy there about 4 years ago, he did not give me confidence nor did he appear that interested in doing it.

This car I know isn't worth much even if it was running but it's such a nice machine to drive I'd hate to get rid of it, I had it over 10 years.

I'd appreciate any thoughts and recommendations you might have.

regards

Blair G

The local trans shop would actually be a better place to start. Dead 5HP24s in BMWs are their bread and butter.

Yeah the ZF tranny's fairly common, so just find a shop that knows them.

Thanks for the responses! I took your advice and found a local trans shop that had 5 stars on Yelp. I sent them a message via Yelp looking for a ball park figure. They got back to me with a rough quote in 2 hours on a Saturday! The Jag hadn't been started in many months and fired right up when the key was turned. Pulled it out and gave it a wash and shine. I called the shop at 8.30am on Monday, by 9.15am a truck was here and the car was on the back on its way to the shop.

They called today and the car needs a drum, clutch plates, new filter and torque converter for $2800 plus tax, right at their quote. Should be ready to pick up on Monday or Tuesday!!

It'll be great to have car back and running again!!!

That's right in the fair ball park, I paid $2300 a couple years ago w/a small mom & pop type shop in eastern NC.

I would make sure that they replace the main pressure regulator valve in the valve body. From my understanding, that’s one of the two reasons why the drum breaks. The new A drums are allegedly made more sturdy and was also another reason why the old drums failed.
