The lubrication system of all modern cars has a screen on the oil pump pick up in the sump and the spin on oil filter would both prevent any metal pieces floating around in the sump from getting into the drilled oil pressure passages in the crankshaft. Rod or main bearing failure is mostly caused by oil starvation. This condition could have been caused by the previous owner(s). If there was no knocking noise at idle, then I would rule out bearing failure.
