Lots of codes
As I continue to try and diagnose my XJR, today I got these codes:
P0333 Knock sensor left side output high
P1638 CAN link ECM
P1642Fuel pump monitoring circuit high input.
P1797 (x3) Neutral switch malfunction
P1637 CAN link ABS
P1643 Fuel pump circuit low input
I also got restricted performance, ABS/Trac not available, handbrake on warning light, and finally, she locked up in park on me at a stoplight.
BTW, no codes for the knock sensors which I had been getting over the past week or so and throwing her into restricted performance mode.
I had to reset the codes and restart a few times before I could get her out of park.
Tough to explain to the many folks who offered to push me out of their way that I couldn't move the car cause it was locked in park.
I think I'm going to throw a new battery in the old gal and then see what she does.

Unlocking the shifter.
FYI, there is a procedure listed in the owner's manual to release the vehicle manually from park. You need a (size 30 I think) torx driver and the instructions to do so.
I would advise everyone to acquire the necessary tool and knowledge of how to do this.
It was pretty frustrating last night sitting there in traffic unable to get her out of park.
The procedure is simple and requires the removal of a threaded plug on the J gate, insertion of your key in the hole and then moving the shifter out of park, but not into reverse, then remove the key from the hole and then move the shifter to neutral to start the car.
The old gal has a new battery now, we'll see if that improves her attitude, lol!

Code P1642
OK, so as I continue to talk to myself in this thread.........., lol!
I installed a new battery, replaced the LH knock sensor and did a hard reset.
Got restricted performance today and the only code I pulled was P1642.
Doing some research on the forum, it seems that this code has nothing to do with the fuel pump circuit as indicated in the list of codes, but indicates a communication failure between the modules in the car. I also saw where folks had cleared a P1642 by letting 100 miles go by, cleaning the MAF, plugging intake leaks, changing spark plugs, replacing the instrument cluster and some even said that it was caused by simply plugging in a non OEM code reader, which is the case with my $50 reader.
I guess I'll just start at the top and go down the list.
Anyone got any other suggestions?
Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? lol.

The only thing I can add is the details on the Gear Shift Interlock Manual Over Ride:
Sitting at the head of a line of traffic is not the place to learn about this!

Hi Vector
Our 2001 XJ8 was giving us P1638 DTC almost every day. It was resolved with new gold tip wiring to the TPS.
Then the P1642 DTC started to appear intermittently. I found out that the Instrument Cluster Module had a bad circuit board and replaced the Module with a used one we found on Ebay.
8 months later we had P1121 and P1122 DTC showing up for a few weeks and we had our throttle body rebuilt to resolve the issue.
No more DTC codes since August 12, 2012.

How did you "diagnose" the bad circuit board on the Instrument Cluster Module? The ICM's are going for under $100 on the 'bay, might be an inexpensive fix for the P1642 code. When you replace the module are you stuck with the mileage on the replacement? or can it be reset to your actual mileage?

Ross (sparkenzap) also asked the same question in the forum thread that I started on P1638 DTC.
Look at my forum post:

also look at post# 8 in thread. It will give the weblink to the Instrument Cluster Module replacement info.

codes
Hi Vector, P1642 could be your obd reader. I had the same problem with the first one I bought, it would show the code that was giving me a problem, but also throw can bus errors, and send the dash haywire. Here is a list of obd readers which are known to work.

Fredd,
Thanks for the heads up, but I have an Actron CP9125 which is on the list as OK.
You can see that I listed the code reader as a possible cause in my post #3 above.
"some even said that it was caused by simply plugging in a non OEM code reader, which is the case with my $50 reader."
I drove the car about 30 miles last night (without the code reader plugged in) and I got no "restricted performance." I did not plug in the code reader at the end of the drive to check codes.
I had been driving with the reader plugged in so I could pull codes when I got an RP condition. When I hit "read" the other night I got the shifter lockup and the ABS/TRAC/handbrake Christmas tree lights on the dash.
I am no longer getting the code (P0333) for the LH knock sensor, but I replaced it and I think that resolved that issue.
The other codes, including P1642, may be related to the scanner I am using. Just because its on the list doesn't mean its perfectly OK for our Jags.
I am going to put some miles on her and see if this problem will resolve itself.

Christmas Tree lights
I had a similar problem with my scanner. It's an UltraGauge - and I do now keep it hooked up all the time to read temperature and fuel trims. But when I first got it I hooked it up and took off for work. I half mile later, my dash lit up and the car went into restricted performance mode. I found that this was due to the scanner polling or scanning for the protocol automatically. This back fed into the Jag's ECU causing problems. I found it in a forum online somewhere, but the answer was to turn off automatic protocol scanning - or force protocol or something like that, and I've had no problem since.

Knock sensor for $28
I found this knock sensor on Ebay for $28
Airtex 5S5619 Knock Detonation Sensor | eBay
Installed it and it works fine, good value compared to the dealer price!
BTW, 100+ miles and no RP or codes! (I have probably doomed myself by posting that, lol!)
